For this week I have chosen one of the more popular songs that somehow fell under the aegis of New Wave: "Sunglasses at Night" by Corey Hart. In many ways, this song was never one of the really important songs to come out of the decade; it was somewhat derivative (ever compared the intro to the Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams"?) Corey was unable to pronounce any of the words well enough to be understood (I just got into an argument the other week about what the lyrics actually were) and he was hardly an original looking face in the music scene. But, he was able to very skillfully create a blend of what had come before, and in doing so, created a song that in many ways epitomizes the decade in which it was made. "Sunglasses" is one of my favorite songs of all time, because very few songs scream 80's so loudly or so clearly.
