Damon in an interview from Hultsfred 1996
The interview is made by a female reporter from the Swedish radio station P3 and I'm
sorry, but I've lost the first question, and answer. You'll have to imagine them. And
another thing. For those of you who haven't heard of the Hultsfred festival, it's a music
festival in Hultsfred, Sweden.
When is that then?
You never really realise you're being crap until you're being crap which is quite frustrating,
because you never actually get a chance to sort things out, until it's too late.
But is that after a singular gig or?
Just generally. I think it's very difficult to be consistently fantastic. I think pop-music is such an
odd business that it's only really occasionally you get it out right, when the spots are on
and everything make sense.
Is there something you'd rather be doing then, at the moment?
No. Well it's got so many things involved in it. I mean you don't necessary have to be on tour,
there are so many things to do. But everyone knows that.
Probably.
Damon laughs…
Some things can be repeated endlessly…
Football is a big part of your life though, Chelsea.
Well, I really got into football as a way of distracting myself from taking everything so seriously,
but I found I enjoyed it so much that I sort of take that too seriously now.
You play just as well as watch then?
Yeah, I play quite a lot.
With friends or just…?
I've been very lucky. I suppose it's because I'm famous. I get to play ridicules games. I played
at Wembley for England and I'm playing for Chelsea at Stanford Bridge on the 29th. I've been
asked to play for Comic Relief. Do you know what that is?
Yeah!
Across Africa, in August.
Are you going to do it?
I might do it.
Pause…..
Have you been camping like this, like these kids before?
Um, yeah. I did it in Glastonbury once.
What was it like?
I took a lot of acid and had a really bad time.
That's what happens.
Yeah! Why do young people always take acid?
Laughter from both sides….
In a tent especially.
That's the worst place on earth to take it!
That's dreadful, but we don't get much of it here. They just drink home brewed.
It's very enlarged on the actual festival side so they drink it really fast in the tent
and then run in there and fall asleep in front of the gig. That's the wild youth.
Were you wild as a kid?
Not particularly, no. I'm wilder now that I was.
Really?
Oh, yeah! By far. I've found I've got wilder the closer I've got to thirty.
Oh. How long is it left then?
Two years.
Are you scared?
No, I mean, I was thinking you get 10 years in pop-business. And I started when I was 21 so
when I'm 31 I should maybe stop.
Oh, please, DON'T steal this interview. It took me some time to listen and put it on paper, so ask me first, or
