BLACK SABBATH

No other band towers over the history of heavy rock like Black Sabbath. Their brand of blunt, visceral proto-metal, forged in the furnace of Birmingham, England, saved rock 'n roll from the hippies, updated Phil Spector's wall of sound visions to Monoliths of Distortion hallucinations, and restored rock's all-important danger element in the process. Mssrs. Osbourne, Iommi, Butler, and Ward followed their instincts and won, cutting their muscle in seedy venues in the Midlands and Hamburg, Germany, far away from the Swinging London scene of the day and its trend-riddled masses. Black Sabbath, upon its release Friday the 13th February 1970, incited music critics' wrath, yet provided another textbook example of the adage that fans buy records, not critics. Shot from nowhere, in a matter of months Black Sabbath went Gold both in the U.K. and the States, catapulting the back-street roughs to the head of the class and exposing the world to their overpowering devils and decibels double-whammy.

The events that followed are a testament to Seventies excess and legend: multiple magnum opuses (Paranoid, Masters of Reality, Volume 4), ravenous chemical consumption, management scams, troubled marriages, the famous California Jam '74, break-ups and regroupings, and ultimately a torn and tired band collapsed from within. Iommi, Butler, and Ward pressed on with the name and the legacy. A despondent Ozzy took solace in a Los Angeles hotel suite for months, coming up for air only to jump-start one of the greatest and most envyied rebounds in rock history.

Two decades on, after the Reunion album and tour, Ozzfest '99, The Last Supper DVD, and the band's first Grammy, to boot, the original, unstoppable Black Sabbath is back, headlining in the sixth-annual Ozzfest and slated to record their first album of new material since 1978 in the Fall of 2001. Their timeless music has influenced three generations of musicians and fans and their motto rings truer now than ever-Never Say Die, indeed.

Ninguna otra banda se levanta sobre la historia del Heavy Rock como Black Sabbath. Su marca de espeso, visceral proto-metal, forjado en la fragua de Birmingham, Inglaterra, salvo al rock 'n roll de los hippies, renovaron las paredes de visiones sonicas de alucinaciones de monolitos de distorsion de Phil Spector, y reestablecieron el elemento de peligro importante del Rock en el proceso. Osbourne, Iommi, Butler y Ward siguieron sus instintos y ganaron, esparciendo su semilla en Europa Central, Alemania, muy lejos de la escena Snob de Londres de aquellos dias. Black Sabbath, tras su lanzamiento del Viernes 13 de Febrero de 1970, incitaron la ira de los criticos de musica, aun asi proveyeron otro ejemplo de libro de texto con su adagio de que los fans compran discos, no criticos. Asi como de la nada, en cuestion de meses Black Sabbath ganaron el Oro tanto en E.U. como en el Reino Unido, catapultando lo subterraneo a primera clase y exponiendo al mundo a su poder demoniaco y decibeles de doble wha.

Los siguientes eventos son un testamento del exceso y leyenda de los Setentas: multiples magnum opuses (Paranoid, Masters of Reality, Volume 4), desenfrenado consumo de substancias, malos manejos, matrimonios problematicos, el famoso Jam '74 en California, truenes y reuniones y, finalmente, el colapso de la agotada banda dentro de si. Iommi, Butler y Ward continuaron con el nombre y el legado. Un despojado Ozzy se refugio en una suite en Los Angeles por varios meses para tomar un segundo aire y despues regresar para comenzar una de las mas grandes y envidiables carreras en la historia del rock.

Dos decadas despues, tras la Reunion, el album, el tour, Ozzfest '99, el DVD The Last Supper y el primer Grammy de la banda, los inparables y originales Black Sabbath estan de regreso, encabezando el Sexto Anual Ozzfest y preparandose para la grabacion de su primer album de material nuevo desde 1978 en el Otoño del 2001. Su musica atemporanea ha influenciado tres generaciones de musicos y fans, y su actitud de Nunca Digas Morir, hoy mas que nunca suena bastante convincente.
