a tanya fable

tanya as a child

well, i didn't know her of course but here's my guess...
she was wee then, wee-er than she is now
smiled a lot
giggled
slammed her bike down the stairs
baby silver tooth she...

...joined a band

in the summer of 1991 i had a crush on this girl and she really liked the throwing muses--she lived in boulder, me in denver, and i had a pair of tickets to the muses show at the boulder theater...and she really wanted to go...and i knew she wanted to go...so i called her, all sweaty and nervous...this is a true story, really... ok, i admit it, i didn't like the muses much then, but i liked this girl who liked the muses...so we went to the show, we walked to the show, the boulder theater was close to her house...and this is what i remember: kristen was pregnant, her ahem, belly hidden behind her guitar, the music was all disjointed and abstract, kinda funky though, tanya played guitar and grinned and grinned, tanya sang a song too, one of her own, little did we know then... but i never saw that girl much again, that girl i had a crush on... but i got to see the muses with her, our one big date thing i guess, and i would never have seen them if it wasn't for her...i hope she doesn't read this...maybe no one will read this, in cyberspace everyone just looks at the graphics, right?
god, i hope so
so that was the first time i encountered tanya

tanya as a belly

saw them twice (belly that is)... star tour, again in boulder, but at the glenn miller ball room, radiocreep opened (big stars now!) tanya watched them a bit from the audience, so antistar of her, belly was a blur of guitars and rustling melodies and tanya's voice, sweet and soaring ...oh and that tanya stomp thing she does onstage, you know, well you don't know if you haven't seen her live, it's hard to describe, kinda legs all splayed and stomping around... then the king tour, denver, ogden theater...i forgot who opened, probably big stars now, again all guitars, louder! tanya all smiles, bassist gail all punky, noise! fluttering songs...tanya stomping... they were giving away copies of rolling stone in the lobby: belly gets big, it said on the cover...they didn't

tanya married...tanya happy...tanya alone... belly not big, just gone...broken...sad... but then came tanya's wondrous solo ep, sliding and diving, a 4 song teaser, played and played for months until finally lovesongs for underdogs arrived, all shiny but hidden away under that blur of a cover
tanya shivering
tanya smiley
tanya brooding
tanya seductive
tanya alive
...learning about alive, learning about the meaning of alive...
...which you've by now discovered
i haven't seen the solo tanya in concert yet, maybe soon, maybe i'll run into that muses girl... now that would be awful...
