Introduction

Often times when we are bored we do things that we wish we, or would not ordinarily do or did.  This also applies to the internet and computers.  People will tend to be infront of their monitor for hours without paying attention to their surroundings.  Thus "time flies by."  It is often hard to find a good and descent Nirvana page to visit.

Graphics

The page seems to adjust well with a monitor resolution of 800x600.  I can assure you that it would be fine at a rate lower than that.  As for the browsers, there are no main differences.  The layout is rather simple.  To the center-left are images naming the sections that are on the site.  To the center-right is a picture of Kurt.  Below the figures is a counter.  The purple background and the logo of the page seems to blend in well together.

Picture Gallery

The picture gallery is very neat and organized.   There are several sections:

  • Band - 13 pictures

  • Kurt - 23 pictures

  • Krist - 2 pictures

  • Dave - 2 pictures

  • Pat; Courtney; Man who found Kurt's body and the place: 1 picture each

There is also a section that is linked from the bottom of the picture gallery that gives way to an older gallery, which is not a significant improvement over the previous one.  There are a total of 18 pictures in the "older" section.

Guitar Tabs

A total of 97 songs are tabbed.  It has them numbered, and when you click on a particular song it goes to the tabs.  I think the tabs are very readable.

Lyrics

There are lyrics for all of the albums, except Wishkah.   It does include some rare songs as well.  When you click on an album, you get a track listing, and from there you can make a decision as to what lyrics you want to read.

Multimedia and Others

The page offers a total of 21 MIDI files.   Mostly of the songs that we know, so it is not a big variety as I am sure many of you MIDI fans thirst for.  There are 11 SMS3 files on the page as well.  For those Doom fans out there, there are 2 WADs you can add to the game to make it more enjoyable.

Most Nirvana pages do not include the Tom Grant Murder Investigation much anymore.  But since this page is a bit...outdated, you can view a lot of information from Tom's report about his speculations as to how Kurt died.   Another small amount of files that the page has are MP3 files, consisting only of "New Wave Polly" and "Verse Chorus Verse."  The latter song is probably in full-length because it is 3 megabytes in size.

In addition to the multimedia things, you can also read the suicide note in text form.  This is another thing that is disincluded in Nirvana pages now.  As for the links, as we can already presume, are outdated.   There are a few that are probably still around.

Finally, there is a section for Nirvana information.  It has the Nirvana FAQ, Recording Session and Song List v. 2.0, Concert Chronology, Equipment, Discography, and about the song, "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?"

Connection

About the test:

  • Both browsers were closed before the test.

  • Internet Explorer was opened and tested, Netscape was tested after.

  • Address for the main page, or page that consists of contents, or the page that was viewed in the screenshot was pasted in the testing browser.

  • Time was ended when the icon in the top right hand corner stopped.

Internet Explorer: 26 sec.
Netscape Navigator: 23 sec.

As you can tell, Netscape seemed to have a slight edge over IE this time.  There are no differences between the browsers graphically or in terms of connectivity.

The connection test was done on a 56k Winmodem connected at 44,000 bps.  Remember download times will vary depending on your modem speed, browser, server of the page, telephone line activity, and your internet service provide (ISP).  This will not guarantee that the page will download at the same rate on your computer as it does mine, this is just an estimate.

Conclusion

As I have mentioned in almost all of my reviews, we can learn something from a page even if it does not appear to be good.  Indeed, it shows how times have changed for pages.  Today, many pages focus more on multimedia things than anything else.  It is not absurd, but it does show that we do need to focus a little bit on the content as well.
