Introduction

Remember the good ol' days when pages had two choices: frames or no frames?  Those days apparently are gone.  Nowadays, pages have tables and image maps to deal with, which seems a lot more convienent to a lot of internet surfers.  Still, there are some that like frames and some people that like it all at once.  That's where Bry Guy's Nirvana page comes into place.

Graphics

As I have mentioned in the above paragraph, you have probably gotten the hint that this page does indeed offer two choices.   Consisting of frames or no frames.  At first it seems that, upon visiting the page for the first time, that all you have is a logo, and that is it.  That is not the case.  Scrolling down a bit and you will find that you have the choices for frames or no frames.

There are no significant difference between Internet Explorer or Netscape while visiting this page.  The main difference is the connection time, which I will get to later in this review.  The page looks pretty descent with 800x600 monitor resolution, which is the most commonly used resolution.

Near the bottom of the page you will find some banners, ads, or anything else that you may find appealing that is non-Nirvana related.   A lot of banners and images are broken.  This gives the idea that this page has not been updated for quite a while.

Frames or Non-frames?

For those of you who are traditional users, that is, for those of you who prefer non-frames, you will find that for that particular kind of page you will find all text.  That includes everything in every section.  The frames page does not offer a better solution.  the frames does not seem to help the page out in which it should.  The frame is adjustable. The winner out of this one is the frames page.

Information

This page seems to be a little more on the multimediac (whatever that means) side of things, but hopefully we will find some informative sections.  Here's the run down:

  • Guitar tabs - You have the usual variety.   That would disinclude Wishkah, but it does include rare songs.  When you click on an album or section, you get the tabs directly.

  • Bass tabs - Includes the same format as the above section.  The only difference is the sections it includes. It only includes the first four albums.

  • Lyrics - If you thought this was different than the other two sections, think again!  It includes the same layout, and thus sections as the guitar tabs section.

  • Interviews and articles - There are a few articles and interviews.  I am sure that many of you have read them already.

  • Nirvana links - There are a nineteen links.   From the looks of it, the links appear to be a tad bit outdated.

  • Miscellaneous links - Seventeen links.   Offers some links to DOOM sites and Beavis & Butt-head sites as well.

Multimedia

The first section is the video section.   There are sixteen files in all.  Some come from MTV's site, and there are a few that come from the site.  As for the sound files, you will see that there are some that are found on the site and another site.  I tested one from the other site and it seems that site is a bit outdated to the fact that the file was not found.  For those of you who are dying to know, there are a total of fifty-four (54) sound files.

There is hardly a multimedia section without a picture gallery.  This site lives up to that standard by displaying forty-six (46) pictures.  It does not have them in sections.  Simply a description of each picture.

The Other Sections

There is a chat room.   It seems to be an outdated one, but it is a chat room nonetheless.

Connection

About the test:

  • Both browsers were closed before the test.

  • Internet Explorer was opened and tested, Netscape was tested after.

  • Address for the main page, or page that consists of contents, or the page that was viewed in the screenshot was pasted in the testing browser.

  • Time was ended when the icon in the top right hand corner stopped.

Internet Explorer - 48 seconds
Netscape Navigator - 53 seconds

I tested the frames page this time.  The non-frames page seems to load 8x faster when I tested it with Netscape Navigator though.

The connection test was done on a 56k Winmodem connected at 44,000 bps.  Remember download times will vary depending on your modem speed, browser, server of the page, telephone line activity, and your internet service provide (ISP).  This will not guarantee that the page will download at the same rate on your computer as it does mine, this is just an estimate.

Conclusion

I must give this page effort for trying.  I know that does not mean a lot, but some people are not as dedicated and determined as others.  The main lesson I think that we can learn from this page is that if you are not willing to put up with a page: updating and changing it, you might as well take it down.  Or, on the other hand, if your page offers something to the Nirvana and internet community, hand it to someone else.
