Introduction

Every once in a while, we will go to a search engine in hope of finding an interesting page to visit.  You would try to visit a site upon your query, and you would hopefully get a list of sites in return.  This can cause a problem, however.  Search engines does not have the ability to tell when a site is updated.  In short, you could be clicking on a site that has not been updated for two years.

The old sites are plesant to look at because of their simplicity.  They may not be graphically advanced, or they may not be good to look to at all.

Graphics

This page is excessively bright.  Hence the name "In Bloom."  There is a picture of yellow flowers to the left of the page, and to the other side, a set of lines for a variety of songs.  At the bottom, under a lower frame, are the sections that this site contains.

As with Internet Explorer and Netscape, Internet Explorer seems to have an advantage in this.  Netscape seems to have a problem loading the lower frame, however there are no major differences.  You should have your monitor (or browser) settings to 800x600 pixels.

When you click on a section.  You will have two more frames to deal with.  On the now top-frame, you have a banner for the site, and to the left a picture of the name of the section you are in.

The graphics on this site, as mentioned, are simple but nice in a sense.  It could be better, but it could be worse.

The Page

The following sections are listed in the page.   Including a description of each one:

  • Pictures:  Three sets.  The first page you have thumbnails of the album covers.  Thumbnails in the section are not balanced.  What I mean by that is that they are different in length and width.   There are thirty-one total pictures, however there is one that is broken.  I had problems getting to each section.  The server said that the page could not be found, but with a few attempts it worked.

  • Sounds:  You have the option to download Real Player and MP3 Player.  Nonetheless, there are only Real Audio files on this site.  How many?  Seven.

  • Tabs:  For the five albums, including rare songs.  In addition it includes a bass section.  You click on the album and you get the songs.

  • Lyrics:  From six of the album.   Courtesy of the Internet Nirvana Fanclub.  It also includes rare songs.

Connection

About the test:

  • Both browsers were closed before the test.

  • Internet Explorer was opened and tested, Netscape was tested after.

  • Address for the main page, or page that consists of contents, or the page that was viewed in the screenshot was pasted in the testing browser.

  • Time was ended when the icon in the top right hand corner stopped.

Internet Explorer:  10.5 seconds
Netscape Navigator:  07 seconds

As you can tell, Netscape Navigator downloaded a lot faster than Internet Explorer did concerning the page.  It seems that Netscape has a better time "remembering" the pages.

The connection test was done on a 56k Winmodem connected at 44,000 bps.  Remember download times will vary depending on your modem speed, browser, server of the page, telephone line activity, and your internet service provide (ISP).  This will not guarantee that the page will download at the same rate on your computer as it does mine, this is just an estimate.

Conclusion

A page with a small amount of content.   Nothing original, nothing special.  However it seems that we can learn a lot from this page.  Indeed, the graphics are nice and simple, which is not necessarily a bad thing.  The download time on this page was excellent, but keep in mind years ago it would have been longer.  If your not going to work on a page, just take it down.
