Introduction

Probably one of the most popular Nirvana songs is "Lithium."  There is also a page that is titled after the song.  So I'll ask the question: is this page as good as the song?

Connectivity Test

About the test:

  • All browsers were closed before the test.

  • Order of testing were in alphabetical order.

  • Address for the main page, or page that consists of contents, or the page that was viewed in the screenshot was pasted in the testing browser.

  • Time was ended when the icon in the top right hand corner stopped.

  • U.S. Robotics Practical Winmodem 56k installed during test.

  • Time shown in minute/second format.

  • Read the Disclaimer for more information

Browser Time
Internet Explorer 5 00:17
Neoplanet 2.0 00:19
Netscape 4.1 01:20
Opera 3.15 00:59

Well, it seems that IE finally gets it day with this page.  Netscape and Opera had a harder time downloading this page.  What was the reason for such the heavy download time?   Not enough organization.  Yes, organization does help download time.   For example, if your pictures are not the same size, would it help?  Most likely it would not.

Disclaimer: The connection test was done on a 56k Winmodem connected at 32k bps.  Remember download times will vary depending on your modem speed, browser, server of the page, telephone line activity, and your internet service provide (ISP).  This will not guarantee that the page will download at the same rate on your computer as it does mine, this is just an estimate.

Graphics

About the test:

  • Matrox Millenium G200 8MB used.

  • ASTVision 4I monitor used at 16-bit color and 800x600 pixels.

  • Browsers viewed: IE   5/Opera 3.51/Netscape Navigator 4.01/NeoPlanet 2.0.

The page seems to fit well in all of the browsers.  If I had to choose which page I would view it with graphically, I think either Opera or Netscape would be a fine choice.  The page has frames, and for a lot of people, frames are horrible.  They are a great way for organization if you have a long list of things: which this page has.  More than likely, you can always compress your sections in more ways than one.

Another thing that this page has that is a fault are the pictures at the top.  Pictures are fine, but they need to be the same width and length...which saves download time and it looks better.  In addition, the page has a lot of open space.  It is fine to keep some space, infact, you must have some room.  However there is a fine line between too much and too little.

Information

The following list contains the sections that relate to information.  There will be a description and review of each section.

  • Lyrics - Contains covers of each album, (the In Utero picture is broken).  When you click on an album, you get the lyrics.  No anchors or anything like that.
  • Information - This information section has some background information on Nirvana, more information, meanings of the songs, even more information, and an interview with Guitar World.  It seems that the point this information section is trying to get across is Nirvana's history.  The three information sections, interview, meanings of the songs, they all seem to provide some background information of some sort.
  • Tabs - The same layout for the Lyrics section in the Tabs.  Nothing different here.  The only disadvantage I see here is for people who play bass or play drums.
  • Suicide - This section provides no information about the suicide (that will be found in a latter section of the page).   What it does provide is the scanned picture of the note and text version for it.
  • Links - Short and sweet.   Provides some links to a few Nirvana sites, with a description and score from 0 to 10.  Makes sense?
  • Murder Theory - Something that many pages do not have these days.  If your having a hard time finding it, this page has Tom Grant's whole report on his speculations on Kurt's death.

Multimedia/Other

The following list are the sections on the reviewed page that is related to multimedia and miscellaneous sections.

  • Pictures - Four sections: pictures of Kurt, Nirvana, Album covers and Singles. The Kurt section = 93 pictures, Nirvana = 34 pictures, Album = 6, Singles = 12 pictures.
  • Sounds - As of now, there is only a 'live' section.  It only has four songs. Hopefully there will be some additions [if any] made.
  • Downloads - Five downloads: a screen saver, desktop theme, desktop theme #2, Kurt caculator, Nirvana font, and the Incesticide font.  I would add a screenshot of the desktop themes at least.
  • Polls - There a several polls you can take.  Things from whether you believe Tom Grant and who your favorite band is.
  • Chat - No need for those Java chat rooms.  This page has a chatroom in mIRC, and it gives all the information at the respected area.
  • Other things - There are a few other things at this page, such as freem e-mail address and another page the author made.   Be sure to check those out.

Conclusion

It's a very simple, straight forward page.  I think it has a lot of potential if it works at some of the things it needs to work on.  Just remember to keep it freash and updated.
