Introduction

We sometimes come across a page that looks decent.  It is odd how we can like one page, and like another that is completely opposite to it.  Whereas we do not like a page that is similar to the first one.   The Nest of Salt seems to have a lot of the new and older stuff that are/were provided in Nirvana pages.

Graphics

I will be honest with you here, there are no main differences between the browsers in this page.  With IE5, the tables that the page has looks a little bit better.  If you'll notice how the table seems closer to the top in IE5 than it does in Netscape.  The page looks good in 800x600 resolution with 32-bit [True Color].

The structure of the page is very well laid out, particulary to the tables and horizontal lines that are in the page.  In the main table, you have on the right the sections, the introduction in the middle, and below that the author's e-mail address and a poll.

Information

The first section we will look at is the lyrics section.  We have all of the albums, including Hormoaning, but no rare songs are available.  You will find the covers of the album, which the last two are not in order.  The covers seem to be a little poor in quality, but that is not the most important thing. Upon clicking on your choice, you are again faced with the cover, and below that are the tracks to the songs, which you will be anchored to if you click on one.

Following the lyrics section we have the Songs List section.  This is no ordinary song list I suppose.  Here is what is so "special" about it:

"This list includes pretty much everything Nirvana did:
Covers, instrumentals, demos, jams, intros, rehearsals and live performances.  Some of these 'songs' are just names after something the band has said on stage. For example when Dave said "We practiced last night" - then it could end up as a song called "Practice" on some CDs. Note: The song is written by it's most "popular title", and the name after the / is what the song has been called on bootlegs and more."

That pretty much explains it.   As for the Nirvana Dictionary, well, you've seen it before.  the neat thing I like about this is that it has a list of the alphabet; when you click on a letter it goes to those songs that contain that letter.  The only problem is that there's no way (without scrolling up) to get back to the top.  The Timeline contains some important dates.  Again, we are dealing with anchors.  Each year that something happens will be listed there.  The format does not look too good, but the content is there.

You can also find things the author of the page heard in Weird Things on Songs.  I personally thought it was interesting, because he went through it thoroughly.  Again, the format does need to be changed.  Following that section you'll find Krist's post to alt.music.nirvana.   You will also see Dave's Top 10 Drummer Jokes.  In addition to that, there is a text version of Kurt's death note.  There is also a message board for the page.

Multimedia

  • Picture Gallery - 16 pictures, all in thumbnail.

  • Movie Gallery - Since the videos are from Geffen's website, you can expect them to be 30 seconds in length.   However there is a little variety from some of the albums and videos.

  • Sound Gallery - Nothing else except MIDI files.  As usual, you can expect a small size in the file and a lot of songs that are available.

Connection

About the test:

  • Both browsers were closed before the test.

  • Internet Explorer was opened and tested, Netscape was tested after.

  • Address for the main page, or page that consists of contents, or the page that was viewed in the screenshot was pasted in the testing browser.

  • Time was ended when the icon in the top right hand corner stopped.

Internet Explorer 5 - 08 sec.
Netscape Navigator - 06 sec.

Well there is not significant difference.  Netscape edges Internet Explorer this time.  However each time you go back to the same page in Internet Explorer it loads faster, nearly instantly.

The connection test was done on a 56k Winmodem connected at 44,000 bps.  Remember download times will vary depending on your modem speed, browser, server of the page, telephone line activity, and your internet service provide (ISP).  This will not guarantee that the page will download at the same rate on your computer as it does mine, this is just an estimate.

Conclusion

A well-rounded page somewhat.  The page offers nothing out of the ordinary, but it does offer the basic stuff that some sites have forgotten about.  Hopefully this page will add more things to it and also build upon the things it has already.
