Page: The "Priest" They Call Him
Reviewer: Robert Brooks
Date: May 14, 1999

Introduction

As far as I know, none of the members of Nirvana belonged to any religion, much less being a "priest."  Chris did dress up as a priest for the cover of The Priest They Called Him.  Go to any bootleg page and you will definitely find out what I mean.

The graphics one this page is fairly simple and organized.  The layout does have some flaws.  One flaw includes the download time.  A banner here or there is okay, but having a banner being downloaded from another server can lead to problems.  Another flaw is the navigation bar to the left.  It shows the main section with its sub-sections, which you can not click on, this is a bit inconvienent, either just show the sections or make the sub-sections clickable.

The page has a black background, with blue, green, red, and white making up the main colors on the page. There is a blue navigation bar in the left corner, with green and blue text.  In the center of the page is the logo, a banner to the stie, and a description of the site.

Information

On the main page the navigation bar shows you the sections that has the organization, from looking at these sections, you will already be familiar with these sections.

The first informative section is the lyrics, which consists of all of the albums and rare songs.  When you click on a thumbnail view of the album, you will see the lyrics in a completely different format as compared to the main pages.  Is this bad?  No, because some people may want to actually print the lyrics out.

Following the lyrics are the tabs, which is similar to the lyrics section in format.  The album thumbnails for the bass tabs are larger than the guitar.  You can also download the drum tabs in a WinZip file.

In the text section, a section that primarily focuses on FAQs and the like, consists of Dave's Drummer Jokes, Kurt's note, information on Nirvana's former bands, the U.S./U.K discographies, thoughts about Kurt's death, a timeline and the liner notes from the records.  Some of the sections I decided to check myself, namely: former bands (contains a simple but nice list of the band, the year it was formed, the members, and some other information about it. I would suggest adding some of the records or songs they made, and the year the broke up), and the timeline, which is like the former bands section.  In addition, you have the Complete Nirvana FAQ from DP's site, the Equpment FAQ by Chris Lawrence, and the list of all of Nirvana's songs by Rasmus Holmes.

If your looking for some links, this site definitely has some.  You have text links, banner links, information on winning the site's award, awards the site has won, and webrings the site is affiliated with.   Most of the links are pretty current.

Multimedia

If you monitored closely to the list of sections, the first section that is listed on the page is the picture gallery with 350+ pictures.  Three-hundred and fifty pictures is quite a lot for one page.  The sections consist of one for each member, categorized by live and photo shoot.  It also includes a section for the whole band.  If that wasn't enough, you have magazine cover pictures, album and book covers, and pictures of the Cobain family.  The main advantage of this layout that the pictures gallery has is that it is set up in tables, but not thumbnail views, indeed, it would take quite a bit of time.  But a description wouldn't hurt.

If you have a hard drive full of ... nothing, then there are some things that you could download.  For example, this page has links to MTV's and Geffen's online sites to download movies, in one Zip file you could download all of the MIDI songs.  You also have Real Audio files for released albums and rare songs.   The latter section's link is not working.  There are some other things such as wallpaper, screensavers, and programs.

Conclusion

This site, as I have mentioned, does have soem flaws.   The graphic are neatly organized and clean, but it could improve somewhat in it's quality.  Graphics are not everything, the content of the site is what counts.   The contents that are on this site are pretty good, considering sections such as the timeline and the list of the former bands -- the type of information it should have.  It does have a lot of things that you'll see everywhere else.  I recommend this site for anyone looking for some information, but if your looking for songs to download, this may not be your site.  Overall, a good site.
