Page: [Spurgu's EXTREME Nirvana page]
Reviewer: [Robert Brooks]
Date: [September 18, 1999]

Introduction

Spurgu's page has certainly grown in popularity since it's debut.  In the last review I concluded with:

"I think there has been a lot of effort put into the site, nevertheless I believe there could be more effort put into it.  I see some original content, and some not-so-original ones; hopefully there will be some more original content as the site grows."

Connectivity Test

  • Modem:  US Robotics 56K Winmodem.

  • Connection speed could not be determined.

  • "Welcome" pages are included in the test.

  • Disclaimer: This is not meant to be 100% accurate.

Internet Explorer downloaded the site in about 32 seconds, while Netscape Navigator downloaded the site in about 45 second.

Explanation:  I think it's a rather good download time, it is just this time my connection was not all too great.  Under normal or better circumstances, I believe the page would probably have downloaded in the 28 to 36 second range.  The page itself looks like it downloads in that range, perhaps even less than that.

Page Interface

The page really has cleaned up it's act.  Judging from a screenshot I have taken during a previous review, it has done an excellent job.  The mood of the page is sort of gloomy, but the colors contrast to make it "cool" I guess.  The background is black (with gray patches as it's tile), and to the left is a frame without the scroll bar as central navigation.  In the main pane, there are some site news, as well as some other things.  Overall, it's a fantastic interface that needs to be kept.  No strong recommendations here.

Page Content

In the last review, Spurgu's page had a long list of stuff, ranging from information to multimedia files.  Although the site still has quite a list, it seems to have narrowed the list down a bit:

  • News - [Link to Obituary Birthday's news section, which is a very good source for Nirvana-related news.]

  • General Info. - [Take the "general" part literally.  The subsections in this section is the basic stuff.  If you this page is a big rip-off, don't fret, most of the other addresses are from previous hosts of the site. Basically you will find interviews, lyrics, tabs, the suicide note -- the general stuff.]

  • Multimedia - [Mod, MIDI, Computer stuff, fonts.  The computer stuff section is probably the most extensive one (besides the MIDI), which contains Winamp skins that I have not found on other Nirvana sites.]

  • Misc. Stuff - [Call this the "director's cut" from the General Info. section.  I do not think creating a different section such as this is necessary.  In the mood for a laugh?  Check out Dave's 10 drummer jokes.  In the mood for thinking? Check out Kurt's quotes.  In the mood for understanding the site? Check out the site's FAQ.  In the mood for understanding Nirvana? Check out Nirvana For Dummies.  In the mood for creativity? Check out Nirvana ABC.  There's also an interesting image found in the Cobain Cola (just be sure the actual company doesn't find out.)]

  • Images - [Very extensive number of pictures.  In addition to the 194 pictures that the site has, it gives a link that will provide over 500 pictures.  The pictures are divided into the usual sections, and there doesn't appear to be anything too rare.]

  • Videos - [Over 81 files, ranging from interviews to concerts.  The live performances have a short and a long clip.]

  • Rare MP3 - [Error: Cannot find server.]

  • Real Audio - [Link to the Nirvana Real Audio Archive.]

  • Webrings - [A current list of webrings the site is affiliated with.]

  • Links - [A total of 48 links that seem to be pretty good and current.]

  • Site Reviews - [More site reviews.  Interesting methodology for conducting the reviews.]

Conclusion

My thoughts about this site remains the same, somewhat.  The interface looks fantastic, and I think that is where the greatest improvement lies.  It has improved with the multimedia section.  It still has a long was to go, but I do think this site is worth a visit.
