.....a brief interlude And it hits you like a freight train; nothing subtle about the differences between the two cds you hold in your hands. Counting Crows has always been a versatile band; a quiet band with the occasional explosion of running rock. Always a surprise when they let loose, as they did with the radio release of "Angels of the Silences," which, to be honest, scared many Crows fans into believing that their band had gone hard. Nah. There are two sides to Counting Crows, and on a typical night, the two sides merge perfectly to create what is their own signature live performance. However, with the release of Across A Wire: Live in New York, we get a taste of both worlds; the reason for the double cd set is to expose us to both the subtlety and to the lively aspects of the band. With the first cd, Storytellers: VH1, we encounter Duritz and the band in what happens to be my favorite appearance. The cd is a fantastic representative of an extremely personal, intimate show with the band. It's something you might have seen if the Crows were still playing coffeehouses and small clubs. The imagery provided by Adam's pen and now his voice is expanded upon by the quiet serenades. Extremely satisfying: this is what we've come to love about the band. But everyone needs a little stage-jumping now and then. And for those of you intoxicated by the fever and fury of a live performance grounded in loud guitars and yells, there's MTV's Live from the Ten Spot, which doesn't hold back in its performances of the Crows' most rock-ish songs, "Angels of the Silences," "Have You Seen Me Lately?" and others. This is what it would be like to be smashed in the midst of a crowd on a Friday night, having to jump to get the slightest glimpse of the band. This is live. ------------------------------------------- Many thanks to Chris Tordesillas; in offering me the chance to review the Across a Wire album for his page, he also gave me the chance to examine what it really was about these songs that brought the emotion out in myself and other listeners. It's been a good experience and one that I wouldn't mind having again. I can't thank Chris enough for this opportunity. Thanks, man. --Jason thank
