Quotes
"I look cool, I am cool" - Larry, 1997
"There's a thin line between interesting music and self-indulgence. We crossed it on the Passengers record." - Larry, 1997
"During the course of that very first afternoon, I saw that some people could play. The Edge could play, Adam just looked great. Big bushy hair, long caftan coat, bass guitar and amp. he talked like he could play, used all the right words, like "gig". I thought, this guy must know how to play. Then Bono arrived, and he meant to play the guitar, but he couldn't play very well, so he started to sing. He couldn't do that either. But he was such a charismatic character that he was in the band anyway, as soon as he arrived. I was in charge for the first five minutes, but as soon as Bono got there I was out of the job." -Larry
"The thing that has kept us going is the fact that we are friends. If it had originally been based on our music, we would have failed." -Larry
"I like gaps. I like to be able to feel the music-not to clutter the songs. Lots of new drummers now tend to fill in all the gaps and leaves no space." -Larry
"My earliest memory of Larry was when we were starting off. We were at our first rehearsal in his kitchen and all these girls kept climbing over the walls and looking in the window at Larry. Larry just shouted at them and told them to go away. And then turned the hose on them! Larry likes to play drums." -Bono
Born: October 31, 1961
Artane, Ireland (near Dublin)
Parents: Lawrence Mullen Sr., Maureen (killed in car crash of 1978)
Sisters: Cecelia (1957-...), Mary (1964-1973)
School: regular public school, Scoil Comcille (taught in Irish), School of Music, Chatham Row &Mount Temple Comprehensive school (2 years behind Bono (Paul Hewsen))
Music: Started on piano, then switched to drums. Played in Artane Boys' Band, but was kicked out for not cutting his hair short. Played in the Post Office Boys band, but left for some unknown reason.
Cecelia bought him a drum kit, but he couldn't do anything with it. He posted a note at his school, Mt. Temple, "I wasted money on drums, did anyone do the same with guitars?" And so it began. (this is not a complete quote, I forget what it really said (the words) so don't think I'm right) Paul Hewsen, Dave and Dick Evans, Adam Clayton and some other people showed up at his house at 60 Rosemount Avenue, in Dublin. U2 was formed, first called "Feedback", after the noise from Adam's amp, then "The Hype", and finally U2, a name given to a spy plane.
