The early part of 1980, Brent Burns recorded a sequel to NO CRUDE, NO FOOD called CHEAPER CRUDE OR NO MORE FOOD. He sent a copy to Paul Harvey, who played it on his national radio program. There was an oil embargo going on at the time, and people were angry about the price of gasoline, especially in California where there were LONG lines at the pump. Combine all this, and you get a Number 1 record. Frankly, we were all stunned, but very happy for Brent and Bobby Butler, whose voice was featured on the disc.

I received a phone call from Brent asking if I would travel with him to California for a series of LIVE, radio and television appearances to promote the record. Of course, I said yes. We based ourselves at the Long Beach, California Holiday Inn as The Brent Burns Duo and on those ocassions when Brent was otherwise occupied, our Grapes mate Steve Whitehurst would drive down from Burbank to fill his slot on stage with me at the Holiday Inn. Steve and I were The Nurk Twins.

We did several shows together, having the time of our lives playing Beatles songs and old Grapes of Wrath material. It was very relaxed, and the audience loved us. (grin)

This trip was enjoyable in many ways. In addition to Nurk-fun, I made an appearance with Brent on The Mike Douglas Television Show (CBS-TV, Hollywood), and was interviewed at KFI-AM 640, Los Angeles.
