» CHAPTER ONE «
Brian's scream pierced the night as he was jolted awake. His head collided with the bunk above him. He barely felt the pain in his head. His mind was spinning with the images. Cold sweat poured off his body and drenched the sheets and his clothing. His breathing was ragged and his heart felt as if it was about to leap out of his chest.
"Brian?" a soft voice came from beside him. The blonde saw tears mixed with the sweat on Brian's face. In short what he saw was the shadow of a man he had once known. This before him was a scared little boy who had lost his mother. The blonde got no verbal reply, but he wasn't expecting one. Brian never spoke any more. There was only a select few who could get a reply from him; his cousin, Nick, AJ, Howie and occasionally his mom. Only those people really knew what happened on the night that had changed Brian's life forever.
Brian's friends had gotten used to him waking up in the middle of the night and they were prepared to help him at any rate. Brian refused to look up at his friend. "They're still out there waiting for me." Nick listened intently to Brian's words. "They want me. I know too much and I can destroy them." Nick didn't know who "they" and "them" were, but he knew they had something to do with that horrible night. Nick noticed the blood trickling down Brian's forehead.
"Bri, you hit your head on the bunk again, I think we should clean that off and put some ice on it." Nick suggested. He helped the older man to a small table. After Brian awoke from his dreams, he didn't respond completely with the outside world. However, given 20 minutes and he would comprehend everything. Nick cleaned the cut and handed Brian some ice.
"Do you even know what happened two years ago?" Brian asked out of the blue, looking directly at his friend.
Nick was shocked. Brian never mentioned it and avoided all talk of that fateful night. Not only that, but he was really looking at Nick, not just looking in his direction. "I know a little, but I've never been told the whole story."
"No one has," Brian paused, "Only three know. One is dead, one was the cause of this and the other is me." Brian licked his lips and continued. "Do you want to know the whole story?"
Nick was desperate to know, but he didn't want to push his friend into telling him. "If you're up to telling me." He hoped Brian couldn't see the anxious look in his eyes.
"Please understand that me telling you puts your life in danger."
"Okay," Nick agreed. He was a little nervous, but he knew Brian had to let it off his chest or it would eventually kill him.
"Well, it started three years ago..." Brian began the tale.
