» CHAPTER ONE «

Nick Carter was rehearsing with his fellow Backstreet Boys for a show the next day. "Ouch!" grumbled AJ. "Nick, watch out for my feet dude."

Nick seemed to come out of deep thought. "Huh? Oh, sorry Bone," he murmured.

Brian stepped in. "Nick, you’re doing worse than usual. So what’s up man? What’s on your mind?"

"First off Brian, gee thanks." Everyone snickered. "Second, I can’t stop thinking about Mandy since she broke it off with me last night. I keep thinking about her beautiful soft hair, her gentle eyes, the nights we....um....played Nintendo," Nick spilled, sighing.

"Tough break, Frack, but you’ll find someone else to.....um......play Nintendo with," Brian replied.

The guys started laughing at the pun, with the exception of Nick, who only cracked a half-smile. "If you say so man." But Nick really wasn't so convinced. He’d probably never find another girl like Mandy. And if he did, she’d probably just break his heart in two again.

Lauren Adair slammed the phone the down with tears. "I’m through with guys," she murmured, sniffing. She had really thought Devin was "the one." They were so much in love. Or so she’d thought.

She recalled the bitter telephone conversation with him just minutes ago. "It’s not you Lauren, it’s me. I don’t want to be in a serious relationship with anyone right now. I love you, but I need a break. From us. For a long time," Devin had said.

"In other words, you never want to see me again. I get the point. That’s why I saw you with Stacey Wilson. Well, you can have that hoe. I’m through with you," Lauren fired back, then slammed the phone down. "How naive of me to think that I could find the right person for me. The love of my life. I may be told I’m beautiful, but that only attracts jerks. I’m always going to be single," Lauren thought aloud. And with that, she picked up the phone.

"Brrrrrrrrinnnnnggg." Jessica Tucker’s phone rang. By the Caller ID, she saw it was her best friend, Lauren. "Hello, Lauren?" Jessica asked.

"Jessica!" she heard Lauren sniffling.

"What’s wrong Lauren? Are you O.K.?" she asked worried.

"Well....I guess I’m O.K.....well no I’m not. It’s Devin. He dumped me just a few minutes ago, via telephone. I’m kinda sorta heartbroken," Lauren replied.

"That jerk! He couldn’t even tell you to your face. And even then...what was his excuse, that scumbag?" Jessica said almost angry.

Lauren sniffled. "It was a load of bull about him not wanting to be in a serious relationship right now, and that he needed a longgg break. But he’s seeing that tramp Stacey Wilson, I know it. So I told him that I got the point and that he could be with his hoe. Then I hung up on him."

"Well, good for you. But I’m so sorry that you’re crying over him like this. He’s not worth it," Jessica tried to comfort.

"I know, but I just keep thinking about when he was my man...the one I wanted to be with...I mean, I thought he was it. He loved me and I loved him. I just can’t get over him, and him getting over me that quickly. It must’ve been my looks all along. I’m such a idiot," Lauren muttered.

"Hey! Don’t get down on yourself! It’s not your fault in any way! He’s the idiot, because he didn’t realize what good thing he had. Once he’s done with that tramp, who by the way is so not as pretty as you, he’ll come crawling back because he knows what he’s missing out. You’re gorgeous, intelligent, funny, sweet, caring, and talented, and one day someone just as right for you will come and sweep you right off the ground," Jessica informed her friend.

"Thanks for the compliments, and trying to cheer me up, but I don’t think any guy could make me feel that way again. And if he did, he’d just break my heart," she sighed.

"Well, Lauren, I just remembered something! And I’m sure it will bring a smile back to that pretty face of yours!" Jessica popped up excitedly.

"What is it?" she heard Lauren ask, still in a depressed voice.

"My uncle, you know the one with all those connections, got us front-row seats and backstage passes, to the Backstreet Boys concert tomorrow night!" she gushed.

Lauren forgot her situation momentarily. "Wow, how’d he get those? That’s sold out!" she said.

"He knows the guys at the arena like, really well. So you’re coming with me, right? I mean, I know they’re not your favorite band but, this is some opportunity! Who knows," Jessica said mischievously, "We might just sweep some Backstreet Boys off their feet."

Lauren sighed. "Well of course I’ll go, but I don’t know how much it will get my mind off Devin."

"It will, you’ll see. We’ll have a blast," Jessica concluded.

"I hope so," Lauren thought aloud.
