» CHAPTER FIVE: THE AUDITION «

Kevin, Nick, and Brian were the first to show up at the small lobby for the audition. The lobby was called the "Music Room", it contained a small, low stage with a piano, a very expensive looking sound system, and a couple of couches. Tory and Crystal showed up a few minutes later with Monica.

"Hi, Crystal," Nick said, happy to see her.

"Hey, sexy," she replied, flirting majorly with him. Then the two of them sat together on one of the couches.

"Tory, hey," Brian greeted her.

"Hi buddy, whats up?" Tory replied. They sat together on another couch.

"Well, I feel left out," Kevin said. "Hi, Monica!"

"Hi-hi you," Monica said.

"Wanna go play on the piano?"

"K-K!"

Kevin plunked her down on the piano bench and let her bang away at the keys. It was 5 after 7 when AJ showed up with Kayla and Kate.

"Hello," Kevin said, standing to shake Kate's hand. "I'm Kevin," he finished admiring the girl. She had beautiful green eyes, and short, dark hair. She was thin, but not too skinny. She was the girl Kevin had always been looking for.

Howie and Gwen showed up about 5 minutes later.

"Howie, finally," AJ said. "I thought I was late, and here you are, just showin' up."

"Shut up, AJ."

"Sorry man. Oh, for those of you who don't know, this is Kayla and Kate" AJ said.

"And this is Gwen and her daughter, Monica," Howie said.

Then Kevin added, "Nick and Brian are over there."

"With Tory and Crystal. Wow, there sure are a lot of us" Gwen added.

"Hey, Crystal, Nick what are you guys doing?"

"Look at them!" Kayla said. "Um... guys... you're in a public place. Now stop. Or I WILL throw cold water on you!"

"Sorry," they mumbled in unison.

"Good, now it's time to sing," Tory said.

"Alright, lets go!" Crystal added.

Gwen gave Monica to Howie and put a tape in the sound system. The tape was music to the Monkees song "Now I'm A Believer." Gwen started by singing the two lines she had begun to believe were true.

"I thought love was only true in fairy tales,
Made for someone else, but not for me."

The others took over for the rest of the verse, then they all harmonized perfectly for the chorus.

"Then I saw her face,
Now I'm a believer.
I couldn't leave her,
If I tried."

Then Kevin got up, turned off the tape and said, "That's all I have to hear!"

"Yeah, you guys are great," AJ added.

"Really great, honestly," Howie said.

"Thanx," all the girls said in unison.

"OK, this is killing me," Kayla blurted.

"Whats wrong?" AJ asked.

"Gwen, about Monica, you might think I'm rude, but I don't care..."

"You want to know about Monica's father?" Gwen finished for her.

"Yeah" Kayla said.

"Well. I'll just make it as short and painless as possible. When I was 16 I fell for a 20 year old who said he loved me. Well, one thing led to another, and Monica was born 2 days after my 17th birthday. He said he loved me, that he was the man I had always dreamed of, that he would do right by our baby, he lied. He stuck it out through the pregnancy, but right after Monica was born, he disappeared. He must have changed his name, 'cuz no one can track him down, so he could pay a little child support. And so Monica could at least meet her father" Gwen said telling them all a story not many people knew. But she felt, for some reason, she could trust them all.

Espiecaly Howie, who now looked warmly at her, and played with Monica. She had stopped believing in love, until she met Howie. Just like the song, one look at his face, and she was in. Head over heels.
