Many serial killers are attracted to law enforcement and may serve occupational positions
such as security guards or may even impersonate police officers to exploit the position
and status to search for potential victims. Another reason they impersonate figures of
authority is to gain the power and prestige of the position, which is absent from their
often times menial labor. Some even participate in man hunts or investigations that are
out to locate the murderer.
The serial killer shows a striking preference for fantasy over reality and the sadistic
and murderous fantasies usually begin about ten to fifteen years before the first murder.
These fantasies eventually becomes so overwhelming that the thoughts invade their minds
constantly until they finally act upon them. When they do so, it temporarily eliminates
the obsession until that one is worn out and another begins.
Though it is relatively uncommon, it have happend that serial killers have hunted in
pairs.
Women only constitute approximately about five percent of all serial killers, many of
which commit suicide after the killing or shortly thereafter, and many of those that are
classified are questionable.
