  POEM
    Comments:
Forwarded to me by a junior in campus who always called herself "The Blurr"(sic), I was surprised to receive this sensitive poem from her. We exchanged e-mails for a period and I discovered that, contrary to the name she gave herself, this junior had been hiding her keen sensitivity and intellect behind an apparent empty-headedness. You bet I never knew.

  I Bet You Never Knew
by C. Bolin (attrib)

I bet you never knew that I was listening
all the times when you were talking to me.
I bet you didn't think that I heard you
when you told me all you hoped that I could be.

I wonder if you knew how much it meant
to see your dreams for me shining in your eyes,
All those times you didn't know that I was looking
as you blinked away proud tears you wouldn't cry.

I guess you didn't know you kept me going,
I knew you were behind me so I prevailed.
And I always knew that you still believed in me
through those times when I failed.

You probably didn't think that you'd really reach me
and make me see how much you really cared.
Or that your courage was an inspiration to me,
I was made more strong by the strength you shared.

I wonder if you ever saw the respect I had,
though I was often too proud to admit it.
Or if you realized the time you spent with me
would be so precious I'd never forget it.

I bet you didn't think I was listening,
and I'll admit sometimes your words fell on deaf ears.
But I could always see what you were saying, and
I knew you loved me when I glimpsed those hidden tears.
