I was looking for something in my room the other day and found a Leslie Cheung concert special among a pile of old magazines. Then I started flipping through the pages and realized this was the booklets that they sold during his 1985 concert. The 1985 concert! Wasn't it 14 years ago? And that was a concert that I went to myself! As I recall now, the very first concert I've ever seen in my life was this Leslie Cheung concert! The pictures from the booklet I find most interesting now, compared them to the Leslie today, I'm sure his fans or people who know him or have watched his movies will find these pictures entertaining too.
I've never thought that I'd ever make a page about a Hong Kong movie star, as my favourite people are usually Japanese visual rock stars such as hakuei and yoshiki, but in some way Leslie is like them. Even though Leslie doesn't usually put himself in drag or act explicitly feminine, sometimes he poses for a photo shoot in a way yoshiki would pose. Check out this picture of him taken lying beside a swimming pool, does it look like he's fallen asleep or just trying to swim on the couch?

Leslie's Profile

Leslie was born on 1956.9.12, according to the little concert booklet, he was very smart already when he was a kid, academically outstanding, and his family adored him. In 1971, when he was 15, he went to England to continue high school, the next year, entered Leeds University specializing in Textile Management.

1977, graduated. Went back to Hong Kong and participated in the Asian Singing Contest, came second and was in the entertainment business since then.

1978, recorded his first album, I LIKE DREAMING.

1984, with the song MONICA, he became really popular, this was probably the turning point of his career.

1985.8.2, his first concert, full house. Even though I was in the concert at that time, I've no memory of it at all, perhaps it was too long ago, I don't even remember why did I go, did i really like Leslie Cheung then? Did I really like his songs? But looking at these pictures again, he sure looked young and handsome in 1985!

A Personal Note

While making this page, my cousin, who seems to know a lot about Leslie's past, gave me bits of news that I find rather interesting. He said that when Leslie first started his career, he actually encountered lots of rejection, which I suppose was rather normal. Leslie was in a show many years ago, and was singing a song, when he finished, he threw his hat to the crowd, in any usual circumstance, one would assume that the crowd would catch the hat and would be happy to get something from the stage, but what happened was, the hat was actually thrown back to the stage, it was a rather embarrassing scene back then.

When Leslie first joined the entertainment industry, he was not widely liked as people found him gay looking, and thought that he was acting like a sissy. In one interview, he denied such accusations by saying that as he just came back from England, he was following the British fashion trend, he may look avant garde to some, but it didn't mean that he was gay. Of course, that was what he said when he wasn't such a popular and successful movie star/singer like he is now. I believe if you ask him this question again, he would have a much different answer now. It seems to me that he's now doing what he like, enjoying his life and just having fun without worrying about what the public think of him, and I find him a much more admirable and charismatic person today.

Special Thanks

Special thanks to my dear friends from Hong Kong. They have been sending me clips from newspaper and magazines about Leslie Cheung and other people over the years. Without them I'll be too lazy to keep myself up to date with entertainment news, actually I've much more stuff on Hong Kong stars, perhaps I'll put them all on the web one day!
