The 2 main dominations are:
1) Mahayana
2) Theravada
Mahayana is based on Sanskrit texts originated from northern India.
It spreads to Korea, Vietnam, Japan, etc. In contrast, Theravada is based on Pali texts originated from India & Sri Lanka. It spreads to Burma, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand, etc.
Mahayana believes that Theravada has over-emphasized on own salvation. Thus, Mahayana labels Theravada as Hinayana. Mahayana means big vehicle, whilst Hinayana means small vehicle.
The main difference between Mahayana & Theravada is that,
Mahayana believes Buddhahood is the highest attainable state,
whilst Theravada believes Arahantship is the highest attainable state.
This also implies that Mahayana believes there are many buddhas, whilst
Theravada believes there is only one buddha. The only buddha is called Ultimate Buddha to distinguish from the rest of the buddhas, which are in fact the prophets.
Tantrayana @ Vajrayana branches out from Mahayana.
