Suwa Seiryo Sports Day

- by darius

Suwa Seiryo High School has several sports days during the year, in the fall and two in spring. The students choose what sports will be played, and the teachers try to rally a team together. This year I was recruited to join the teachers Soccer team, and we started playing in the morning (October 7,1999) in spite of black skies and pouring rain. Anyway, I had on my 4 year old sneakers which afforded none too much traction, but I managed to hang in there for the whole day, and even score several goals. It was determined that since I was one of the youngest members, I should play forward. I now see why! I am completely exhausted, and have an hour and a half to recover before the party starts (it is a thursday and we've got school tomorrow, but never mind that).

It turns out that in spite of the kids yelling about how tired we looked and offering to take us to a geriactic hospital, the teacher team managed to defeat 4 student teams in a row, and capture the championship! There were a total of 15 teams, so it is a big honor! It did not come at a cheap price though, of course every member of the team is in extreme pain now, but one member (Mr. Moria) was forced to call for a sub when he bashed his face on the back of a students head at the end of the semifinal game. He was coming down from heading a ball into the goal in the last 5 seconds which cinched the victory for the teachers, and unfortunately collided with a student. In the final game, at least two students had to call for subs on account of injuries. A very hard fought tournament, but justly won by the teachers team!!!

Here are some photos that Ms. Ito, the Home Economics teacher and some students took of the games:
