Love is a force more formidable than any other. It is invisible --
it cannot be seen or measured, yet it is powerful enough to transform
you in a moment, and offer you more joy than any material possession
could.

He looked at her and wished that he didn't have to say
what he came here to tell her. The only reason he came was because he
knew her and didn't want someone else to tell her, over the phone or
otherwise.
"Usagi," he started as he walked over to her.
"Usagi? You never call me Usagi. What is it Mamoru-
chan? Tell me, onegai?"
		"I have some news . . . bad news actually . . . "
Mamoru held her in his arms and whispered something in
her ear. A piercing scream could be heard throughout the apartment.

Chapter 2:

He carried her princess-style to her bedroom. Her head
fell softly against his chest as he marveled at how light she was. A
bittersweet smile tugged at his lips. He had always wanted to be
intimate with her, but given the circumstances, he knew she needed him
as a friend, not as a lover.
Mamoru shifted Usagi's body in his arms, causing her to
stir slightly. He stopped mid-step, not wanting to wake her. Rather
than waking, Usagi snuggled closer to him. Mamoru could feel her hot
breath tickling his neck. He breathed in her scent. It was a mixture
of cherry blossoms and vanilla. He felt his heart skip a beat as he
opened the door to her bedroom.
He entered as Luna followed, jumping on the bed as he
placed her mistress gently down, onto the bed. He reluctantly got up
and walked toward her closet. Opening it slowly, so that no sound
escaped, he reached for a blanket and walked back to her.
Luna was trying to situate herself under Usagi's arm.
Mamoru grinned at the sight before covering Usagi's body with the
blanket and sitting down next to her.
He stared at her face longingly, almost painfully,
wondering when he would be able to confess his love to her. He knew
that this was not a time to think about her like that, but he couldn't
help it. She looked so vulnerable under those sheets; he just wanted
to hold her close to him and tell her that everything would be alright
. . . he wanted to soothe her as a lover not a friend.
He sighed and looked away from her. The shades were
still opened, making the room darker. The only light that filtered
through the room was of the faint streetlights below. Her room was
very neat, as opposed to his room. Usagi called his place the
'bachelor pad.' He couldn't help it. He was so busy with work that
he didn't have time to think about cleaning and such. Usagi always
came over once a week to *help* him clean.
Truth be told, he never helped her. He always
pretended to be too tired or sleepy to do anything, when in reality, he
wasn't. Mamoru only said those things so that he could watch her,
memorize each gesture, each movement, each sound she made into his
memory. He would call upon those memories whenever he felt down or
lonely. With Usagi's presence in his apartment, everything seemed
brighter, giving him a touch of warmth and hope in the cold world he
faced everyday.
He was a man who wanted to be loved, yet afraid to
love. He knew that if he didn't tell her soon, he would probably end
up losing her to someone else.
Mamoru was broken out of his thoughts by an electric
shock running through his body. He turned his head around and noticed
that Usagi's hand had reached out to his, clasping to his, attempting
to entwine with his. He loosened his fingers, allowing her slender
fingers wrap around his large ones. His other hand felt jealous of
the attention and longed to touch a part of her. It reached out and
caressed her face, as it had done before to the picture. Only this
time, his hand could feel the softness of her velvet skin and the
warmth that lay underneath . . .

		"Tsukino-san?"
Rather than looking up, Keiji growled and kept looking
at the papers before him. He was in the middle of a major business
merger and did not have time for these interruptions.
		"What is it?!"
When he heard no answer, Keiji looked up and found that
the young man in front of him froze. Keiji was not very happy.
"You have the audacity to interrupt me, than freeze
when I give you the chance to speak?" he said authoritatively.
Composing himself, the young man nervously said,
		"Gomen sir. I-I-I-"
		"I what?!"
"Um, sir, um, someone called for you."
"Really? Many people call for me!"
		The man bowed his head.
After a moment of silence, Keiji asked,
		"Well?"
		"Nani?"
"Who was it!?! I honestly don't know who hires these
idiots!"
		"Gome-"
"If you apologize one more time, I'll have you fired!"
"I understand. Chiba Mamoru called. He said that it
was very important that you call him back. He left his cell number.
He said that it is in regards to your daught-"
		"Out!"
"H-h-hai," he said, running out the door, closing it
behind him.
		'Chiba Mamoru . . . ' he thought, 'I wonder what he
wants now? Probably wants to ask for Usagi's hand.'
Keiji disliked Mamoru from the first day they met. He
remembered it well. It was after his wife had died. Mamoru came to
the funeral and was by Usagi's side the entire time. Keiji didn't
like it at all.
Mamoru seemed to be a decent person, but in Keiji's
opinion, he lacked what Usagi needed. Mamoru couldn't support her
with his meager salary as a detective. What Keiji made in a week,
Mamoru could not even make in a year, maybe more. Keiji wanted both
his daughters to marry respectable men, men of his approval and social
status and Mamoru, well, Mamoru didn't fit into this niche.
Keiji had wanted Kyoko to marry the son of a very
affluent businessman. Kyoko blatantly rejected the marriage, claiming
that she didn't love him and that the only reason Keiji wanted the
marriage was so that he could finish up a merger. Keiji had not denied
the fact that the marriage would "help" the merger, but argued that it
was in Kyoko's best interest.
He sighed and dialed Mamoru's cell number. He may not
like Mamoru, but for whatever reason, he played an important role in
Usagi's life, so he tolerated him, if only for her sake. Since Kyoko
left because she would not be "forced" into the marriage, Usagi was all
he had left.

Mamoru continued touching her face, this time reveling
in the feeling of her skin under his touch. He etched each crevice,
each contour of her face into his mind. He felt her stir. She opened
her eyes, her blue orbs stared at him momentarily.
		"Mamoru-chan . . . " she whispered under his touch.
		"Hai?" he said softly.
		"Onegai, don't leave me. I've lost so much . . . first
my mother and now, now onee-chan. Onegai, promise me."
He brought his face close to hers and kissed her
forehead,
"Never Usa. I'll never leave you."
She smiled and squeezed his hand. He returned the
gesture as her eyes closed once more and a small smile stayed on her
face.
Mamoru sighed. He could hear her snore slightly. He
decided that he had better call her friends and family to let them
know about Kyoko. He didn't want to leave her just yet though. His
midnight blue eyes kept staring at her, at times, imagining her as his
lover. How he longed to feel her lips on his. She never gave him more
than a peck on the cheek. He wanted more. There was one time, when he
was fifteen, that he did get more . . .

Flashback . . .
The day had been bitterly cold. It was the week before
Christmas and all Mamoru wanted was to be at home, sitting in his
favorite chair, reading his physics texbook. But no. He was stuck out
on the crowded streets of Tokyo. He wanted to leave, but he knew that
he couldn't, not yet at least.
Why, you ask? Simple, he stupidly forgot to get his
best friend's Christmas present. So now, he was forced to be out
in the cold, searching for a last minute present with everyone else
that was out, doing their last minute shopping.
Mamoru sighed as he left the store. He had been to
about a dozen stores and still nothing. All he found was chaos. In
every store there were parents and grandparents alike, searching for
the perfect present for their loved ones. As the store's supplies
began decreasing, Mamoru found that these supposed adults began
fighting for clothes, toys, anything they could get their hands on.
Mamoru couldn't believe it. He vowed never to forget to buy presents
again. He would become more organized and begin to write things down,
so that he wouldn't have to deal with *those* people ever again.
'It sounds like a new year's resolution,' he thought,
'Not a bad one though . . . '
Mamoru was broken out of his thoughts as he saw a
figure sitting on the edge of the fountain. He slowly took a step
further and realized that it was HER.
Her hair was put up in two buns on either side of her
head, as it always was. She was wearing a gray-black pea coat with a
black scarf hanging carlessly around her neck. Her hands were gloved
in black, matching the scarf. She was staring at the water, her eyes
glazed. She looked like she had been crying. Upon further
investigation, Mamoru confirmed that she had indeed been crying. Her
blue eyes were red and puffy and there were still traces of tears
stained on her face. He also noted that she had probably been out for
a long time, since her cheeks and nose were red and she looked like she
was shivering slightly.
She looked so vulnerable to him and, at that moment, he
realized that he wanted to be with her. He had been denying his
feelings for her since the day he met her, but he couldn't deny them
anymore.
He only held back because he was afraid that she would
laugh at him and leave him. So he decided that he would try to be a
friend and see where it takes him.
		"Usagi?"
She didn't hear him and kept staring at the fountain.
He called her name a few more times before touching her shoulder. An
electric shock passed through both of them. Mamoru searched her eyes
intently. He had never felt anything like *this* before. She looked
at him, shocked and confused. They stared at each other for a few
moments, neither wanting to break their gazes.
A lady came over and tapped Mamoru. He was upset and
growled at her. She looked at him sincerely and pointed to the lamp
post above.
Mamoru followed her finger and looked up. Usagi did
the same. Their eyes widened in disbelief. Hanging on the end of the
lamp post was some mistletoe.
"Its tradition," she said, smiling brightly.
Usagi blushed and Mamoru could feel his cheeks begin
to turn red as well. He looked away from her and ran his hand through
his silky black hair. The woman tapped him again and nudged him closer
to Usagi. She wasn't going to leave without seeing them kiss. Mamoru
sighed again. What had he gotten into now?
He sat down next to her and whispered in Usagi's ear,
"Well, I don't think she's going to leave until we
kiss, so we might as well get it over with, ne?"
Usagi didn't say anything. He could feel her shiver
slightly. Something told him that it wasn't from the cold. She looked
at him and was about to say something. He silenced her by closing the
gap between them. He kissed her slowly, waiting for her to respond.
He didn't want to hold back, but knew he had to. He didn't want to
scare her away. He was about to give up when he felt her kiss back.
He wrapped his arms around her waist as hers snakes around his neck,
pulling him closer to her.
Her actions were very hesitant, he noted. Then it
suddenly hit him. This was her first time. It was her first kiss.
The girl of his dreams was sharing her first kiss with him.
Mamoru felt overjoyed at this revelation. He had
always wanted to kiss her, but never did. He began to deepen the kiss.
If only he hadn't told her that the kiss was a mistake
and that it meant nothing. Maybe then, things would've been different.
Mamoru never regretted anything in his life. The only
thing he did regret was pushing her away when he knew, deep within his
heart that he could never be more than a friend to her. He wanted
more.
End Flashback . . .

He leaned into her, closing the gap between them. He
only wanted a small taste of her, of the "forbidden fruit." He inched
closer to her and could feel her breath on his lips. Mamoru closed his
eyes and closed the gap between them, when his cell rang.
"Shimatta," he cursed, moving away from Usagi, he
walked toward the window,
		"Moshi moshi. Chiba here."
"Why hello Detective. Nice of you to answer your
phone," the voice on the other end said sarcastically.
		"Tsukino-san."
"Very good. Now tell me what you want. I haven't got
all day."
"Sir I have some bad news for you."
"What? You've finally given up on MY daughter?"
Mamoru remained silent. He couldn't believe that this
guy was Usagi's father. How a man so cold could create such a warm and
caring human being was beyond him.
When Mamoru didn't respond Keiji continued,
"Well, I guess my birthday wish didn't come true.
Perhaps you're waiting for Christmas?"
"Sir. I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but Kyoko is
dead."
		"Nani?!"
		"Apparently, she committed suicide."
