Biography Yana was born October 7, 1979, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Her father was a high ranking KGB agent who mysteriously vanished while on duty in Mali when Yana was 6. She began her career at age 8 and now trains 35 hours per week under coach Irina Viner in Moscow. Last year, Batyrshina was second at Europeans and tied for first in the Viena final of the Grand Prix circuit. She won the world ball title in '95, placing third all-around at the European Cup that year. In 1994, Batyrshina was ninth all-around at worlds, having won two events and placed second all-around at the '93 Junior Europeans. The 5-foot-3 Batyrshina is a fan of the television show "Highlander" (and its star, Adrian Paul), dance music and Mary Higgins Clark novels.
