anime (ae nih may)
1. Japanese animation.
2. A popular style of animation, which originated in Japan,
arguably began with the Disney-inspired "Astro Boy", and will most likely infiltrate
mainstream American culture with the release of the television series "Pokémon"
and the movie "Princess Mononoke".
SEE ALSO manga, japanimation.
My anime page is in part dedicated to one of the greatest directors - of
anime or otherwise - of all time:
Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki has interests
similar to mine in the Greek myths, and his character Nausicaa
(from "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind")
was inspired by Nausicaa of Phaiakia, who Odysseus encounters in the Odyssey.
Certain among Miyazaki's works will be released by Disney in America and around the
world due a deal
between Disney and the Tokuma Corporation, which includes Miyazaki's
Studio Ghibli. Films which have been
or will be released due to this arrangement include "Kiki's Delivery Service" and "The
Princess Mononke". However, a number of Miyazaki's films, including the surreal "Night
on the Galactic Railroad", have been released in America by distributors other than Disney.
