THAILAND

2002
After living in Taiwan in 1992, I moved to Thailand and worked as an English teacher in a Bangkok university for six months. Thailand is a great country and I always enjoyed the dream-like architecture. You can see it everywhere, even in downtown Bangkok where I lived. Though Bangkok is just as crowded and busy as Taipei it was a totally different experience because of the way Thais chose to deal with stress - just smile and everything will work out. Admittedly this can be frustrating when you are in a hurry, but it does lower the blood pressure!

These are recent trips but you can see the original adventures here.

Jim Thompson House

The Fort Temple near Rajadamnern and the Democracy Monument.
The river near said Fort Temple.
Exactly ten years before, May 17th 1992, I arrived at this spot at 6:30 in the morning to find tens of thousands of people waking up on the street. They had started to demonstrate for increased democracy the night before. The night of the 17th I watched Thai soldiers shoot some of these people dead in the same street.

Jim Thompson House is a great way to see traditional Thai architecture. I took a great day-long cooking class there.
ANDAMAN SEA
Here's the scene: seven people, 45 foot yacht, and a lot of snorkeling.

Ko Ngai

Crew: Amy, Chris, Alex, Pete, Jossi, Tessa (L-R).
Near the site where the second week crew was picked up in southern Ko Lanta.
Captain Perry looking the part.
Most sailing days ended this way.

Ko Kradan

Captain and Tessa looking well - cat's loved this picture too - see the teeth marks?
Tessa's points the way.

Ko Kradan

Ko Phi Phi Don of The Beach movie fame. Absolutely stunning but shamefully there is a squallid village of junk-food-eating-loud-mouthed white kids next door on Ko Phi Phi Leh.
Pete looking dashing as always.
And when we'd almost given up hope of seeing them, the dolphins came. This is just of the rather odd all Italian island of Ko Mai Thong near Phuket.
Alex showing off again.

Ko Rang

The last evening, the last island.
