Laughing, Serena and Molly threw the door to their room open. Serena
collapsed on her bed in a fit of giggles.

"Oh my gosh Mol! Did you see his face?" She asked, clutching her stomach.

"How could I miss it?" Molly asked in response, doing a very good imitation.
Serena's laughter started anew, as the phone in their room began to trill.
Serena's expression sobered, although she remained smiling.

"Hello?" She asked. There was no response. "Hello?" Serena asked again,
exasperated.

"Serena?" It was Darien.

"Darien! What's wrong?" She asked, shocked. Molly looked at Serena,
worried. Serena gasped and one of her hands flew to her mouth in shock.

"I'll be right there, Darien. No, no I understand." Serena smiled gently.
"How much do you think? Okay. Bye Darien."

"What's wrong, Serena?" Molly asked.

Serena looked up at Molly.

"Darien's in jail."

~~

"I'm here to see Darien Shields." She told the police officer politely. He
laughed.

"What? A little thing like you is going to post his bail?"

Serena raised an eyebrow.

"I'd like to see him." She repeated.

"Alright, alright. Just relax."

Serena followed the officer behind the desk and into the holding cell.
Darien was standing, staring out the window in a cell, by himself.

"Hey Shields! You got yourself a visitor." The officer called out. Serena
glanced at his name tag, which read Knight.

"Darien..." Serena said softly as Officer Knight opened the cell door.
Darien turned to look at her. A long cut ran across his cheek, and his shirt
was torn, blood having soaked it through in spots. Serena ran to him, and
threw herself in his arms.

"Oh darling! What happened?" She asked as she hugged him tightly. Darien
didn't reply, he just clung to Serena as though she were the only thing that
could save him.

After a while, Serena slowly released him, but remained close to him.
Sometime during their embrace, Officer Knight had seen fit to leave them
alone.

"What happened, Darien?" Serena asked again, gently brushing her fingers
along his cheek, careful of his wound

"I didn't want to call you..." Darien whispered hoarsely. "I would have
called Lita, but she's..."

His voice trailed off as Serena placed two fingers on his lips.

"I'm glad you called me." She whispered to him.

"Gods, Serena... I don't know what happened. I was leaving work, and there
were some guys waiting for me... They jumped me." He whispered, before
pulling away from her. Serena was hurt, but tried not to let on.

"So why are you here?" Serena asked. Darien laughed bitterly.

"They're too rich to be put in jail." He shook his head. "I fought back,
but they told the police I started it."

"And your hurt..." Serena gently touched his shoulder, but Darien turned
away.

"I shouldn't have called you."

"And what would you have done? Spent the next two days in jail, having me
worried sick about you?" She asked him. Darien turned to look at her in
shock.

"How would you know anything about the system?" He asked her. Serena ignored
his question.

"Do you know who jumped you, or why?" She asked.

"They..." Darien hesitated. "They were the same guys that were going to
approach you, on our date the other day..."

Darien looked up to see the wave of grief and guilt wash over Serena. He
cupped her face between his hands, forcing her to look at him.

"It wasn't your fault Serena. Don't you dare blame yourself." Before Serena
could say anything, Darien pressed his lips against hers.

Serena was shocked. A jail cell was the last place she expected him to get
romantic, but since when was Darien predictable. Serena slid her arms around
Darien's neck as she kissed him back.

The taste of blood in her mouth shook Serena out of her fuzzy state. She
pulled away from Darien, who looked ashamed.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have..."

"Your lip is cut." Serena interrupted him, gently running her finger over
his otherwise smooth lip.

"Yeah..." Darien whispered. Serena sighed.

"We should get you out of here." Reluctantly, Serena pulled away and called
out to the Officer, who came back to let her out of the cell. "How much
is the bail?"

Officer Knight raised an eyebrow at her before replying. "Two thousand, five
hundred."

Serena didn't even blink.

"What kind of credit card do you accept?"

~~

Serena and Darien were walking hand in hand from the police station. It was
fairly late, and Serena was exhausted. She had paid his bail, much to
Officer Knight's dismay. Darien hadn't said a word to her since they had
left.

"Serena... Thank you." Darien stopped to look at her. "I didn't want to
call you. I didn't want you to see me like this..."

"Its okay, Darien. I understand." She smiled at him. Darien shook his had.

"I spent most of my teen years in and out of jail cells, Serena. Whenever
I was locked up, I'd call Lita, who would straighten everything up. Then
I met you... Lita told me she was proud that I hadn't called her from jail
in almost a week now. She said I had you to thank for that."

"She came to visit me... She said I was reforming you." Serena giggled.
"But Darien, I like you the way you are."

Darien pulled Serena against him, and held her. The two were illumianted by
the brilliant street light as they stood in the otherwise dark street.

"Your too good for me." Darien whispered to her. Serena shook her head.

"No I'm not."

"Yes you are, and somehow... Somehow I'll pay you back."

"Darien, it's my fault oyu got attacked. It's my fault they picked you as
a target and it's my fault..."

This time Darien put his finger to her lips to stop her.

"Stop it... It's not your fault at all Serena. Believe me. If dating you
didn't set them off, something else would have. It was only a matter of
time."

Serena pulled away, shocked. It had been because he was dating her? They
had beat up her boyfriend for dating her?

Darien saw the look of horror cross her face, and could have hit himself
for letting her know.

"Darien... Darien I..." Serena was slowly backing away from him.

"Serena... I didn't mean... You weren't supposed to know!" He exclaimed,
moving towards her.

"No!" Serena shouted before turning and running off into the night.
