GAIJIN GUIDE TO KITAKYUSHU BARS, CLUBS, & RESTAURANTS

Clubs: Unfortunately, for a "real" dance club experience, there are far too few options in Kitakyushu.  You may wanna make the trip to more cosmopolitan Fukuoka.  But the following venues, depending on the night, can be a lot of fun.  It's hit or miss really.

KOKURA

Fellow - This brand new club is by far the best location for dancing in Kokura.  It's large, has a modern club décor, and reasonably priced drinks.  But like so many other places in this city, all to often it's practically empty.  But sometimes when there is a planned event going on here, a party, a special slate of dj's, the place can get packed and be a great time.  The opening night at Fellow was great and I think they've been struggling a bit to keep that momentum going. Though certain nights since have been a good time too.  The music is almost always great.  More often than not a live dj is spinning all sorts of electronic madness.  Perhaps Kokura is not ready for a dance club and simply doesn't have the scene to support it.  But this is the type of place Kokura desperately needs. . .so I say get the gaijin out in force to help support the place. Adjacent to Xelha, above Red Hot Chilipeppers (2F-3-6-21 Kyoumachi).  Open Sunday-Thursday  8-~ and Friday-Saturday 9-~.  (4)

Megahertz - When you wanna go some place a bit different, check out Megahertz.  Here is a club deserving of a bit more love from the gaijin community.  Because it's not the easiest (or closest) place to find I think people forget about it.  Every month they put out a flyer of events happening there, often bringing in fairly good dj's from around Japan and beyond.  And sometimes they even have a band or two.  It's pretty small for a club so it seems to be hoppin' when a bunch of people show up.  It doesn't have much furniture, so it's got that minimalist, exposed-pipe industrial look.  Best bet is to grab a flyer at Borderline Records next to Fujiyama Mama and plan accordingly.   There may even be worthy events on Sundays.  Weeknights are good for a visit if you wanna relax and listen to some drum'n'bass. 2F 7-17 Konyamachi, east of Tanga Monorail Station between Pangaea and Asaka Dori. Look for the small standing sign out front.  Call for info: 093-531-1906.  http://home9.highway.ne.jp/mhz/mhz.html  (29)

Outer Limits - Since I've never actually been to Outer Limits all I can tell you is that it's owned by Colin and Miyuki of Xelha and that it's popular with a lot of the young Japanese students.  It's "Xelha's Futuristic Oasis"  I think that speaks for itself don't you?  Music: hip-hop, reggae, house, R&B, soul, techno, etc.  Open 8PM-4AM.  Saturdays are 1000 yen w/2 drinks.  EMS Building 3rd Floor, Konyamachi 1-10.  Ph: 093-533-7137.   www.es-web.net/xelha/outerlimits/limits.htm  (25)

Past or Future - This is certainly one of those hit or miss clubs.  I wouldn't recommend going to here on a weeknight unless you wish to be alone with the bartender and dj.  if you're looking to dance. . . well your best bet is Saturday if you don't mind the cover charge.  They have parties every Saturday ranging from 1000-2500 w/1 drink.  I can say that on the few occasions I've paid the cover for a Saturday party I've had a really good time.  Lots of people and good music (mostly house and techno), and an occasional arm-wrestling tournament.  Located on the sidestreet right around the corner from Mister Donut on KyuDensha Dori (Uomachi 2-4-8, 5th Floor).  Ph: 093-533-2020.  (23)

KUROSAKI

That's a laugh.  It's got about 2000 snack bars though.  If there's a place to dance I surely don't know about it.  So if you have any tips please write to Dan Murphy at hiphopcrunch@hotmail.com
