Baby Shanna

I can still remember what happened the actual day - Sunday, Mar 25, 2002. We tucked in for bed around 12am that night, to start a brand new week. At around 3am, Shuhui woke me up and said the bed's wet. Well, we knew that when the water-bag burst, it means we have to rush to the hospital immediately but nothing prepared us for this. We also know that Shanna could be born any time after the 36th week, but not like this! So we grabbed the bag that Shuhui had packed weeks earlier, woke up Shuhui's dad and went to the hospital...

Once we reached there, the staff knew exactly what went on. Shuhui was placed on a wheelchair and was pushed to the delivery ward at the 5th level. After ensuring everything was OK, I headed down to the admission counter. Since we have already pre-registered some weeks earlier, there wasn't anything that needs to be done and so I headed back to the delivery room. Thus began the long wait for us to see Shanna... .

At around 7am, Dr Lee's nurse (Iris) came to visit us and gave us some advice on what to expect. Frankly, we were too dazed to recall anything she said...the delivery room wasn't exactly the best place to sleep in (it was extremely cold). At 9am, Dr Lee came in and assessed that at the rate of the contractions, it would take Shanna a long time to "come out". So he ordered the drips to be used to induce the birth.

A few minutes after the drips went on, Shuhui started to experience real intense pain. This continued for the next 2 hours and the pain kept on getting more intense by the minute and more frequent. Prior to the drips, Shuhui was able to handle the pain with just the Entonox (laughing gas) but once the pain started to become real, she immediately asked to be injected with Pethidine. After the jab, Shuhui became so groggy she fell asleep (altho' she did wake up many, many times due to the contraction pains).

As the contractions became more painful, the cervix was being more dilated as well. So the nurse woild come into the ward and check periodically how dilated it was. When it was about 10cm dilated, Dr Lee was summoned to deliver the baby. When Dr Lee arrived at the ward, Shuhui was all ready to push but was prevented from doing so by the nurse. When everything was ready, Shuhui was told to push and she did. The first push, Shanna's head appeared. And the next push, the entire body was out.

Welcome, Shanna into this wonderful world!
