Martian Successor Nadesico
Tenkawa Akito's just trying to live his life day by day. Ever since he woke up to find himself on Earth, it seems his life hasn't been going anywhere. His home on the Martian Colony is destroyed by the Jovian Lizards. His parents are long-dead. His survival wasn't ensured by an evacuation; it was rather a mystery. One moment, he was on Mars. The next, he's waking up on Earth. His dreams of becoming a cook is being crossed by fate: he is marked (literally) to become a pilot. Fate gives him another shove when he sees a childhood friend and follows her for a talk, hoping to resolve some of his questions. As it turns out, she is the new captain of the strongest battleship ever built, Nadesico. But before he even gets a chance to talk to her, he ends up piloting a mecha to protect the battleship. Eventually, he gets hired to be cook and alternate pilot (though he really doesn't want to be one). And this is how his adventure begins with the crew of the Nadesico: a pilot who's really a cook traveling with an almost emotionless navigator child, a lazy defensive operator, a ditzy captain, and a Gekiganger-obsessed pilot... among many others (trust me).
What do I think? It's a pretty good series. Funny and sad at times. It's a story about one guy's life in the midst of a planetary war. One very special guy... who has a lot of the female crew competing for him. (Sound familiar?) Character development is quite good, although many aspects to some characters' pasts leave much to the curious mind. There's also my opinion that the ending is frustrating! I know it's just about Akito's life, but they've invested so much time on developing and complicating the war, that it's frustrating not knowing its outcome! Is it still going or did they at least try to sit down and talk? That's all I want to know! Argh!! ... Don't let that stop you from watching, though... It really is pretty good. :)
