Neon Genesis Evangelion: Episode Synopses

Episode 01: Angel Attack

Katsuragi Misato is sent to pick up Ikari Shinji from the station, after his father asks for him. Misato remarks that Shinji seems much like her, resentful of their respective fathers.

[The geofront: NERV central, "the key to rebuilding our world, a fortress for all mankind."]

At the same time, the Third Angel, Sachiel, attacks. The JSDF tried to stop the Angel, going as far as using N2 mines. However, the Angel remains undamaged. Command of the operation is turned over to Ikari, who decides to use Eva Unit 01. When Fuyuzuki remarks that they have no pilot, Ikari replies that a spare is being "delivered."

[Eva Unit 01: "man's ultimate fighting machine, the synthetic lifeform known as Evangelion. Built... in secret, it is mankind's last hope." --Akagi]

They ask Shinji to pilot Unit 01, as Ayanami Rei is out of commission and Unit 00 is in cryostasis. Katsuragi protests, saying that it took Ayanami seven months to synchronize with her Unit. However there is no choice. Shinji then replies that he doesn't want to pilot the Eva. His father orders him to leave should he opt against piloting. Katsuragi tells him not to run away.

Ikari calls Fuyuzuki to fetch Rei. He tells her that she "will do it again." She is wheeled out on a hospital bed, wheezing.

When a blast hits NERV and the foundations shake, Unit 01 copies Shinji's actions, at the same time protecting him. Seeing Ayanami's condition, Shinji declares that he'll pilot the Eva.

[Entry plug: capsule containing the pilot to be inserted in the Eva.]

[LCL: fills the entry plug; once it fills the lungs, the blood will be oxygenated directly.]

Shinji's synch ratio is reported at 31.3%. "Amazing" was the common response. The Unit is launched for battle.

Katsuragi: "Shinji, don't get killed out there."

Episode 02: Unfamiliar Ceilings/The Beast

Moving the Eva proves difficult for Shinji. Sachiel attacks, first damaging his arm. It then picks Unit 01 up, spearing through the eye and emitting power surges/waves.

NEXT SHOT: Shinji wakes up in the hospital, staring at the ceiling. Outside, construction for a weapons installation begins.

SEELE remarks that the Angels have returned. "It's the same as it was 15 years ago." It seems that their investment has appeared to be not such a waste. Yet, "if it doesn't pay off, it's still a waste." The Angels have become common knowledge. NERV must censor information to control public response. It would seem NERV has incurred massive costs. It is stressed that Akari's priority should be the Human Enhancement Project, which appears as if it has been approved by the UN Supreme Council. It may be "the only real hope for the future of mankind. Its schedule must not be delayed. "Ikari, you do know that there can be no turning back." "I know. Mankind has no time left."

It seems Shinji has no recollection of the Angel encounter. Katsuragi visits Shinji. An encounter with his father remains wordless. Ikari decides living with his son would not be any good. Misato takes hims in. Dr. Akagi doesn't approve.

A quick stop at the supermarket and a view of the geofront, as the buildings rise from the ground. "This city is a fortress designed to stand against the Angels. This is Tokyo-3. This is our city, the city that you saved."

At the apartment, Misato herself has just started moving in. The apartment resembles a garbage dump with beer cans and microwave dinners everywhere. They split up the chores by "Paper, Rock, Scissors." Introduce Pen-Pen, one of a new breed of hot springs penguins.

Ayanami may work again in 20 days. Akagi Ritsuko seems to have reserves about having children pilot the Evas and voices her concern to Ikari. ... Later, Misato calls Ritsuko and they discuss Shinji. Misato's not sure how to relate.

As he lays in bed, Shinji recalls the events. His Eva had turned berserker. His left arm had regenerated and he attempted to break through Sachiel's AT-Field. Breaking it, he attempts to break the red orb on Sachiel's chest. Sachiel instead wraps itself around Unit 01 and self-destructs.
