Fushigi Yuugi
Yuuki Miaka is a girl not much different from Tsukino Usagi of Sailor Moon. She's a ditz who's always hungry and doesn't seem to take too well with the concept of homework. It's a wonder that she ends up having a complete opposite for a best friend. Yui has the calm personality, the brains, and the more serious outlook. They are preparing for the high school entrance exams to Jonan. One day, when Yui goes to return a book at the National Library, Miaka decides to come along, not even knowing that a National Library actually existed. Upon entrance, she is quickly distracted by the vending machines lined up neatly by the entrance. But as she looks on, a red phoenix flies over her, and leads her to an exclusive section of the library, where she finds an old book: The Universe of the Four Gods. It's an old book, harmless enough -- until she and Yui become part of the story, traveling in what looks like ancient China and sharing experiences with whoever picks up the book. Question: How does one get out of a book?
What do I think? Despite popular opinion, Fushigi Yuugi is not exactly like Sailor Moon. It's not a "monster of the day" show, nor is it entirely light-hearted. There are some more serious issues that tend to surface, despite Miaka's light-hearted antics. Categorizing this anime is hard. On one side, it's a romantic comedy, on another, it's a tragedy, then there's the historical fantasy aspect, and blah, blah, blah else. (Sorry, didn't know how else to put it. Not very eloquent right now.) The characters are well-developed and we get insight to their motives. Warning for OAV1, though. It gets rather confusing, and you have to pay attention very closely, as well as being patient, because everything will be explained in good time. OAV1 is more of an attempt to connect the original series with OAV2 so that its ending could be similar to that of the manga. In any case, make sure you don't miss the little "omake" that's with the OAVs. They're hilarious!
Number of episodes I've seen: 52 of 52? (let's just say all), 3 of 3 (OAV1), 6 of 6 (OAV2)
