Tenchi Muyo

Curiosity killed the cat, or so they say. Well, curiosity almost killed Masaki Tenchi one day. Unable to suppress his curiosity about the sealed cave his grandfather had been warning him away from, he manages to steal the key. Entering, he awakens a sleeping monster. This is when Tenchi's ordinary life ended, throwing him into a life far from quiet. His high school gets blown up, his house gets transported to a spot by his grandfather's shrine, and girls from a galaxy far, far away are suddenly dropping in for an extended visit. The monster whose real form is a flying blue-haired ex-pirate named Ryoko. The royal princesses of Jurai, Ayeka and Sasami, who he later finds out he has some relation to. Ryoko's "child" mother, aged 7,000 years, who claims to be "the most brilliant scientist in all the galaxy." A ditzy Galaxy Police officer, Mihoshi, and her partner, Kiyone. The Tenchi Muyo Universe is full of alternate stories, however. Tenchi Muyo the TV series and the OAV series depict different orders of events and specifics in the events themselves. I don't really know that much about Tenchi Universe. Tenchi in Tokyo happens way later in the timeline, and may have a different background than what the first two have to offer. The movies are practically independent from all the series but still takes some basis from them. Pretty Girl Sammy, on the other hand, is a complete turn-around from all the others. It is completely independent and holds no basis in the the rest of the Tenchi Muyo Universe. All in all, the only constants are the characters and their personalities.

What do I think? All those who think that this is like Ranma 1/2 with aliens instead of martial artists, say "aye." All those who think that its creators had too much fun, say "aye." Seriously, they've spawned off so many alternate timelines that rookie fans get confused when Tenchi Muyo experts discuss what's really going on. And I get the feeling that compared to Ranma, the series is pretty bland. Tenchi doesn't get into many antics, with the exception of the first episode. It's like he jump-started the show, and slowly faded away to the role of the supporting character. He just hangs around and occasionally puts in his input when the girls aren't too busy fighting over him or what not. Oh, well. I forgive him. You've got to admit, though, the series is pretty funny.

Number of episodes I've seen: 13 of 13 OVA, 15 of 26 TV Series, 0 of ? Tenchi Universe, 2 of ? Pretty Sammy, 3 Movies, 4 of 26 Tenchi in Tokyo
