Tenkuu no Escaflowne
(Vision of Escaflowne)

Hitomi is a middle school student with a special ability for precognition. She can catch glimpses the future through divining tools, such as the Tarot and the pendant her grandmother had given her. When she finds out (by word of mouth) that the captain of the track team, who also happens to be her crush, is about to move out of the country, she asks him to give her her first kiss should she break her track record. However, bad things tend to find a way to break fragile moments. And as Hitomi is about to break her record, she collides into a boy from another dimension, who is in the middle of a dragon-hunt (or dragon-slaughter mission). When the dragon is finally killed, Hitomi argues with the boy for almost giving her a heart attack as Amano-sempai and her best friend look on, not understanding the boy's speech (seems he was speaking a different language only comprehensible to Hitomi). Before they know what's going on, however, a bright light shines and Van (the dragon-slayer ^_^) and Hitomi get transported back to wherever Van came from. A place where the Earth hangs in the sky, and is known for its mystical aspects by legend. Now, Hitomi, girl from the Illusory Moon (Earth) must find a way to get back. But the path is not easy as she catches herself knee-deep in trouble with royalty and wars and her improving talent.

What do I think? Watching Escaflowne for the first time, I was a bit surprised by an anime art style that differed from the ones I've recently been seeing. (Basically, I used to divide art style in 2 groups: the 70's and 80's mecha shows like Voltron, Voltes V, and Daimos; and the 90's shoujo-type animation.. translating as those who look like Sailor Moon.) The characters populating the screen are more angular and the colors used are lighter... faded might be a good word. However, the story is good and we do actually learn about the dangers of an overactive imagination as well as the redeeming factors of humanity. The music's pretty good, too. It's well matched to the pace of the story. A lot of it is sober, but it sounds great! There also seems to be some chanting involved in the making. And, oh, yeah. Escaflowne is cool! :)

Number of episodes I've seen: 26 of 26
