One Sweet Day
by Ren`ai chan

**Yaoi warning!** If you don't like Hiei/Kurama or anything like that, steer clear! (Personally - and notice I say _personally_ :p - I can't see how someone _can't_ like it, but that is Just Me. ) I'll admit that it _was_ me who got Phoenix and her sister into YYH, _and_ into the yaoi couple in the first place ...

And pleeeeeeeeease send her comments! She's relatively new at the fanficking buisness, and I want to encourage her to write more, and three people (me, Squeaker, and Phoenix's real-life 'neechan, Ren'ai-chan) probably aren't enough to convince her. :p I will forward all comments to her, so you can either post 'em to the list, or send directly to . Okay? ^_^

Enjoy!

performed by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry I never told you

(A small figure, clad in black, walks slowly towards a gravesite.)

All I wanted to say

(The cemetery is crowded with similar headstones, but one is by itself, freshly unearthed dirt packed firmly in front of a small, nondescript headstone.)

And now it's too late to hold you

(Hiei reaches the gravesite, and stares expressionlessly at the inscription. It reads "Minamino Shuuichi...")

'Cause you've flown away

("...1982-1997.")

So far away

(A picture of Kurama is mounted above his name. It shows his face, but captures none of the life that Hiei remembers used to sparkle in his green eyes. He crouches down and traces the name softly with his fingers, as if confirming that it's there.)

Never had I imagined

(Hiei closes his eyes and moves his hand quickly away, as if he were burned.)

Living without your smile

(A memory of Kurama giving him one of his trademark sly smiles floats to the surface of his mind.)

Feeling and knowing you hear me

(He remembers glaring and walking away coldly, but Kurama's smile never fades.)

It keeps me alive

(Hiei hears Kurama's gentle laughter behind him, and turns sharply, but no one's there.)

Alive

(The sweet sound fades away with the wind, leaving only its echoes within his mind.)

Chorus:

And I know you're shining down on me from Heaven

(Hiei pictures Kurama, as both Shuuichi and the youko, looking like an angel, though he hasn't changed at all.)

Like so many friends we've lost along the way

(He thinks about Yuusuke and Genkai's deaths, but he knows that Kurama isn't going to come back.)

And I know eventually we'll be together

(Angel Kurama stretches a hand out to him, and Hiei unconciously reaches back.)

One sweet day

(Kurama smiles and floats away, drifting slowly yet faster than Hiei can follow, and is soon gone.)

Darling, I never showed you

(Hiei remembers Kurama as he was struck down, his blood spilling everywhere and blossoming like a rose around his wound. He rushes to catch him as he falls, feeling Shuuichi's lifeblood splash over his arms and stain his clothes.)

Assumed you'd always be there

(Hiei pours his youki into Kurama's body, but instead of healing the wound, he only feels his energy slowly leak away as Kurama's blood continues to flow out of his chest.)

And I took your presence for granted

(Kurama weakly places a hand on Hiei's arm to stop his futile attempt. Hiei looks at him, eyes wide with uncharacteristic fear, and the youko smiles gently, his face surreally unmarred except for the thin line of blood coming from his mouth.)

But I always cared [but I always cared]

("Kurama, I--" Hiei begins. Kurama smiles knowingly, giving him a tender look before his eyes dim and his shaky breathing stops.)

And I miss the love we shared

(Hiei stares disbelievingly at Kurama's body as it goes limp in his arms, then lets out a heartwrenching scream of pain and grief.)

And I know you're shining down on me from Heaven

(Hiei remembers fighting alongside Kurama, their minds and bodies in perfect sync.)

Like so many friends we've lost along the way

(Kurama flashes him an arrogant smile, and Hiei gives the youko a half smile in return.)

And I know eventually we'll be together

(Suddenly Kurama vanishes from the scene, leaving Hiei standing alone.)

One sweet day

(Hiei sinks slowly to both knees on the soft earth of the grave.)

[Patient till I see you in heaven]

Although the sun will never shine the same

(He looks up into the sky, as if expecting the whole earth to be dark because of the light that had forever left it.)

I'll always look to a brighter day

(The sun is still shining, however, a cruel reminder that the world continues on and will not stop for the loss of this one life.)

Lord I know, when I lay me down to sleep

(Its light washes over the graveyard, but fails to melt the ice locked inside the fire demon's body.)

You will always listen as I pray

(Hiei opens his hand and lets the sunlight land on it, watching it shine on his skin.)

And I know you're shining down on me from Heaven

(He thinks of the funeral, remembers standing among dozens of mourners. Only a few of those present know the real Kurama and the truth about his tragic death.)

Like so many friends we've lost along the way

(Shiori cries quietly over Shuuichi, the open casket revealing his still face, once full of color and smiles and piercing green eyes. To Hiei, death did not put Kurama at peace. It only made him lifeless and nothing more.)

And I know eventually we'll be together

(Not far from him, Keiko sobs into Yuusuke's shoulder and Kuwabara is holding Yukina. Hiei finds himself too empty to feel his usual jealousy. Instead, he is grateful that Kuwabara can give his sister comfort because he himself cannot.)

One sweet day

(Hiei can't tear his eyes away from Shuuichi's face, drawn irresistably to the pale features of his friend. He continues to watch him as the coffin is closed and lowered into the ground. As they begin to bury it, he walks away, unable to stand anymore.)

And I know you're shining down on me from Heaven

(Hiei shakes himself, trying to escape the memory, and stands up to leave.)

Like so many friends we've lost along the way

(He takes one more look at the picture of Shuuichi on the headstone, to keep forever in his heart. He looks down and sees the epitaph inscribed in the rock.)

And I know eventually to be together

("You captured our hearts, and now you remain forever locked in them.")

One sweet day

(Hiei, for the first time, reads the words, and they bring a small smile to his lips.)

Sorry I never told you

(He turns away from the headstone, facing the longest journey he has ever tried to take.)

All I wanted to say

(Hiei walks away, leaving behind him a perfect black rose.)
