Why Asian-American Catholics feel unwelcome in the Church
- The celebration of Mass in English and in the Roman Rite is unfamiliar to them.
- Many Western religious practices seem offensive to Asians or have no meaning.
- Some parishes isolate Asians or treat them as business clients, apart regular parish life.
Numerous Church documents have spoken out about the dignity of all races within the human family and for the need to respect and learne from different cultures. Among the points made by these documents are the following:
- Xenophobia is an irrational fear, and no excuse for discrimination against newcomers of another race or nation.
- Each race has something important to contribute to the common good.
- To be truly Christian, we must accept all people as family members in Christ and reach out to include them.
- The Church upholds the equality and dignity of all rites, both Eastern and Western.
- Immigrants should not have to give up their cultural identities in order to find acceptance in U.S. society.
- The Church has a responsibility to adapt the gospel to the culture of each people it serves.
- The Church supports multicultural education, social events, and liturgies, and urges all Catholics to learn more about the cultures of other races.
