- Life in a Rice Paddy
Tonight I happened upon a repeat broadcast of
Japan's Secret Garden,
an NHK production for the PBS series
NOVA about
a year in the life of wildlife and people around Lake Biwa, Japan.
In trips to Japan, I have passed by many a rice paddy, but never realized that much more was going on there than just rice growing.
This program shows many Japanese seasonal traditions and a way of life that is fast disappearing in modern times.
- Yukio Mishima’s Ordeal by Roses
Norman Bryson, Chair of the History and Theory of Art, Slade School of Fine Art, University College London
gave an Art History undergraduate student symposium on
Barakei
by HOSOE Eikoh.

- Donald Keene On Meiji Tenno
This evening Dorami-chan and I went to hear a talk
at Portland State University by
Donald Keene,
one of America's foremost experts on Japan and Japanese culture.
His topic was the reception of foreign dignitaries by Emperor Meiji, whose reign transformed Japan into a modern nation state.
No doubt his notes were part of the research he had done for his just-published book,
Emperor of Japan : Meiji and His World, 1852-1912.
- NHL Playoffs Round Two
Surprise, surprise, there are three Canada-based teams left in the NHL playoffs!
From a Canadian standpoint, there can't be a bad result -- more likely than not, one of them will be the
Eastern Conference representative in the Stanley Cup final. Here are my predictions for Round Two,
the conference semifinals (winners in CAPITALS):
Western Conference
DETROIT vs. St. Louis - Wings have more depth
COLORADO vs. San Jose - Avs have more depth
Eastern Conference
TORONTO vs. Ottawa - Leafs tougher
MONTREAL vs. Carolina - Ghosts of Cups past
- More Free Ice Cream
Dorami-chan heard from one of her classmates that
Baskin Robbins was giving away ice cream tonight.
A check of their website confirmed that this was
the third annual Free Scoop Night, when, for every scoop given away from 6-10 p.m., the company makes a donation to
First Book, a non-profit organization that gives children
from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. Though the weather was chilly,
we were happy to do our part to help the cause.
- World Webcast
One of the applications of medical informatics is in the area of medical education.
Today I listened in on a webcast organized by the
International Association of Medical Science Educators,
Technology Enhanced Learning in the Basic Health Sciences by
Peter G. Anderson, Director of Pathology Undergraduate Education, University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Medicine.
People from as far away as the United Kingdom, Turkey and Pakistan also participated. This is how
information dissemination should be done. It is far more time efficient and cost-effective than events like the
Mess In Texas I attended last month.
