TEARS IN HEAVEN (Part Two)
BY: JLALA (jlynpinay@aol.com)
Sitting in the office made Usagi uneasy. Maybe it was that it was too
clean for her likeness or that to her the stench of bad news laid heavy
in the room. Beside her sat Motoki who was wide awake now and looking
miserable. He was tired from the all the tests they were taking. All
he wanted to do was go home and be with Usagi. Turning to look at
her he realize how worried and afraid she was. He promised himself
whatever the news was that he would think of her first. Mamoru
who sat next to his best friend thought worriedly about what
was happening. Maybe it was the pills; he was stupid to give them
to him. But the thought of Motoki suffering made him hurt inside
so of course he would think of trying to ease his friend's pain.
Mamoru had been the one to call Motoki's family, Usagi was at her
wit's end so he helped her out. Unazuki, Motoki's sister and his
parents were also in the room awaiting the doctor who would
deliver them the news, good or bad. Usagi held her armrest tightly
and at the same time tapped her fingers. Motoki noticing her tension
laid a comforting hand on her smooth arm. Giving him a weak smile,
she stopped. It was like waiting for some verdict.
"Why are they taking so long?", Unazuki asked obviously scared from
where she stood. Her father Tagaki Furuhata put a comforting arm
around her. He was scared though as the head of the family he had to
keep calm. Looking at his son who was so pale from his hard night he
prayed to God that what they were about to hear would be good. His
wife, Akarui was talking quietly to Motoki and he saw the tenseness
in her eyes. A woman entered, her graying hair was in a tight bun
and she wore glasses. When Usagi made eye contact she saw that the
woman was someone she could trust.
"Hi, I'm Doctor Emerson", she said and gave them a quick, terse smile.
"I was the one who was able to assist Motoki" Usagi's heart was
pounding and she could hardly hear the woman speak."I ran a few scans
on Motoki and also a quick blood test. I received the results last night
but Motoki was tired so I decided to wait for today to tell everyone."
By the way she spoke Usagi could hear her switch to the cold, undetached
doctor voice.
"What did you find?", Motoki asked sharply. His own anticipation was
getting to him. His grip on Usagi's hand tightened.
"What we found was a tumor", She replied and paused. Inside her own
heart she felt a pain for the young man and his family."It's the
size of an orange and located in the far back of his head."
Behind Usagi she heard Motoki's mother cry out but it seemed
so far from her mind."Because of the size there's nothing we
can do, if we remove it Motoki would be dead instantly"
"There's nothing we can do?", Tagaki asked.
"I can prescribe some pills to ease his headaches over the time he
has", Doctor Emerson answered.
"And how long is that?", Usagi asked for the first time speaking. Tears
brimmed her eyes. Motoki remained quiet but inside he was torn apart.
His thoughts remained of what would happen to his family. To everyone
he loved. Mamoru, his best friend. Usagi...the love of his life.
"I'm not at large to say-", The doctor began.
"GODDAMNIT! HOW LONG DOES HE HAVE!", Usagi shouted as she got up from her
chair. Mamoru and Motoki held her down; she looked like she was about to
lunged at the doctor. Tears fell from her face. Unazuki and her mother
were crying quietly. Motoki's dad hugged them both and looked at his
son. "TELL ME!"
"About four to five months", She told her unwillingly. "Six months at
the most" With that sentence time stood still, for all of them but
most of all for Usagi.

"I think I should stay at the hospital", Motoki said as he and Usagi
laid in bed that night."I don't wanna be a burden for you having to
take care of me" It was hard to speak even about Motoki leaving her
and she felt another set of tears falling from her eyes. She didn't
want him to leave her. He wiped the tears that fell from her face.
God he didn't wanna leave her either.
"It doesn't matter", She said and he held her."I want you here with me
even if it's not for long" They laid down and she put her head on his
chest listening to his heartbeat. She felt him leaving her already.
"Don't leave me" Hot tears spilled forth on his shirt and he held
her tighter.
"Usagi, I can't stay here. What about your education and your
job?", Motoki argued. "You'll lose it all if you stay and take care of
me" There was a silence and Usagi pursed her lips. They both sat up.
She looked him straight in the eye."I'm losing you and that to me IS
losing it all" Usagi turned and turn off the bedroom light thus ending
their argument. Motoki looked at the back of her head and somehow he
knew that she was crying. All he wanted to do was hold her but he
couldn't. The line of life and death held him back. Motoki began to put
a arm around her but stopped aruptedly. Usagi could hear her boyfriend
move and she wiped her eyes. It felt as if she was losing him already.
Suddenly she felt his hot breath near her ear.
"You will never lose me", He whispered."I promise you that" Usagi looked
up at his sincere eyes and Motoki gladly sealed his promise with a
kiss.

"I'm not going to the hospital", Motoki told his friend as the walked
through the busy park."Not until I have to" A twinge of pain pulled
at Mamoru's heart thinking of his best friend being sick.
"So what are you gonna do now?" They reached the lake and began to skip
rocks. Motoki was better though, he rocks skipped more."You still gonna
work at the Arcade?"
"I hope so, I've been out for days with no explanation or anything", He
answered back and picked up another rock.
"Actually I've been kind of subbing for you, I'll told your boss you
were sick", Mamoru said to his friend.
"All those teenagers must have huge crushes on you, huh?", Motoki teased
and laughed when he saw his best friend turn pink. Mamoru did not want
to mention the lovesick teenagers that crowded around him. His face
turned solemn."Thanks for helping me out"
"Anytime", Mamoru answered with a smile."Motoki, are you scared?"
For a moment Motoki stood silenced thinking of an answer.
"I've never been so scared in my life Mamoru", He responded."I don't
know what's gonna happen between now and in a few months." They sat on
two huge rocks. "It seems so unfair to me sometimes but at the same time
I keep thinking that it figures God would take me when everything in my
life was perfect" He paused for a moment."The only thing that keeps me
from giving up is Usagi and you"
"Me?", Mamoru asked.
"I know my parents would still have Unazuki but Usagi, she's fragile and
as much as she doesn't show it I know she feels like some people don't
understand her, she feels alone and you, you've had your parents taken
from you and that really hurt you. I hate to think that'll I'll be
another person who ends up hurting you" Mamoru sat quietly the pain
running through his veins like fire. His eyes filled with sadness.
"No man, you've been the only person whose ever helped me", Mamoru
said."The only regret I have is that we won't be able to be old
men together" They laughed thinking of themselves talking both old and
grey with no teeth and hair. The dream however pop with they thought
of the little time that was left for them. He had never thanked Motoki
for being a good friend."Let's go" As they walked Motoki suddenly
fell to his side and Mamoru quickly caught him. He saw how weak
Motoki was getting.
"Thanks Mamoru" Mamoru vowed that with the little time he had he would
find a way to thank his friend.
"Remember when you said you'd always catch me when I fall", Mamoru
said. "Well the same goes for you"

Usagi carried the bag of groceries to Motoki's apartment where she had
been living for two weeks. It seemed that they were days where her
boyfriend would be so tired that he couldn't get out of bed and others
when he felt fine. The tired days were coming more often and Usagi
sometimes had to help boyfriend stand up. It embarrassed him that she
would have to lead him to the bathroom but there was no other option.
Her eyes blurred when she thought of how sick he was getting. This was
only the first month since they had found out. The wetness of the rain
began to soak the paper bag she held and suddenly everything she had
bought was the on the ground, some broken. Quickly she began to pick
it all up.
"Need help?", A voice asked. She looked up to see Mamoru helping her
gather her things. She was annoyed at how he was trying to be nice
to her now. When Motoki was healthy the guy was sometimes unbearable
but now he was always trying to help her.
"No thank you Mamoru", She answered rudely and gathered up the things
that weren't broken. She walked off leaving him but it caught up with
her.
"What is your problem Usagi!", He asked suddenly. "I'm trying to be a
nice-"
"I don't need sympathy, I don't need anyone else reminding me that
Motoki is SICK!", She said angrily.
"I'm not trying to remind you, I'm just trying to be your
friend", Mamoru said and Usagi looked up at him with an uncertain
look."Listen I just wanna make a truce, okay?"
"Why? So Motoki can see how well we get along without HIM?! So he can
see the two people he loves get along before HE DIES?!" She looked
up at him and suddenly began to sob in her hands. Mamoru put an arm
around her and drew her close to him as she began to cry into his
chest."Mamoru I'm so scared"
"I know what you mean", He said comfortingly."I'm just saying that we
BOTH are taking care of Motoki and that we can't be fighting the whole
time. We have to learn to get along. Truce?" He stuck out his hand and
she shook it. A shock went through them and Usagi pulled her hand back.
"You've got yourself a deal", She said."For Motoki"
"Always for Motoki", He agreed.
