TEARS IN HEAVEN (Part Five)
BY: JLALA (JLYNPINAY@AOL.COM)
It had almost been a week since Motoki had fallen into the coma that
he had yet to come out of. Tests were run and it was revealed to Usagi
and Mamoru that the tumor had spread and was quietly taking Motoki
away from them little by little. It had been hard to tell the Furuhata's
that there only son may never wake up. Mamoru and Usagi spent every
living moment in the hospital by Motoki, hoping and praying that he
would wake up even if it was just to say goodbye. For them the sun
rose and fell only on him. Today however the Furuhata family had
visited and reluctantly the two left. Not knowing what to do and
afraid that if they left something might happen. They walked
together awkwardly not knowing where to go.
"I never realized that I hadn't been out in awhile", Usagi said."I
don't know where to go or anything" She sighed tiredly. "We've lost a
lot, haven't we?"
"Motoki is worth losing eveything", Mamoru replied and Usagi suddenly
walked into a building. It took him a moment to see that they were in
church. Mamoru felt uneasy, he wasn't a religious guy and he knew that
neither was Usagi. "What are we doing here?"
"I guess we could pray for a miracle", She replied and sat in a pew.
Looking around he saw that the place was beautiful. Stained glass
windows that shone with a glow that seemed to be comforting to him.
Statues were in small corners surrounded them and calm fell over
him. Usagi was quiet and in deep thought. "I don't know why we're
here. But there's something about this place..." He glanced at
her and saw that she was bathed in the sunlight that came from
the stained glass. Usagi was an angel all on her own. Her eyes
were morose however, matured by their experiences. She was thinking
of Motoki and prayed to God to let him wake up. To see the eyes that
she loved so dearly. Fingering the ring that was on her necklace
chain Usagi fought another set of tears that threatened to fall.
Suddenly she felt Mamoru's warm, comforting hand on hers.
"Usagi we've lost a lot", He said to her."But we still have each other"
She looked up in his eyes and knew that in this big world, they did only
have each other to lean on. Usagi had her friends but no one would
fully understand except Mamoru for she found a profound understanding
from him. The two had grown close though they never talked about what
had happen that one rainy afternoon. In response she squeezed his hand
back and smiled.
"Yeah we do"

Walking to Motoki's room Usagi waved at Unazuki as she saw them
approach. Deep lines of worry were on her young face. Everyone
had changed, she herself had saw that her face had lost it's youth
and was replaced with a poignant sadness in her eyes. Hugging
Unazuki she wiped a tear that fell from her face.
"No tears Unazuki, not yet", she said solemnly."Anything happen?"
"No, it's just I feel him saying goodbye. Me and him we always had this
bond and I can feel it Usagi", She said.
"Nothing has happened", Usagi reassured her. "Get some rest." Unazuki
caught sight of the ring she wore around her neck. "I thought that
we were gonna be having a wedding this summer" Usagi's eyes were
suddenly wet.
"Yeah me too", Unazuki responded. "I'm sorry Usagi" With a final
hug she left. Motoki's door was open a crack and she heard a
sad voice.
"I'm sorry Motoki, I didn't mean to" She heard Mamoru say. "Dear God
don't leave us yet." Inside the room Mamoru felt the deep emotions
raged from within him. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to fall in love"
Usagi gasped and pulled herself away from the door. She knocked on the door and Mamoru wiped his eyes. She
walked toward him slowly. "I'm sorry to interrupt"
"No, it's alright", he said.
"If you were crying, it's okay", She repeated the same words Rei had
told her. She went to him and caressed his hair. He laid his head
on her flat stomach. "It seems that's the only thing we can do"
**********************************************************************
"Mamoru?", A voice called. Groggily he awoke and saw the Motoki's eyes
were opened. Usagi laid asleep in the other hospital bed.
"Motoki, you're awake" Mamoru smiled and Motoki inhaled suddenly a
deep raspy breath. The smile faded and he saw how pale he was.
"I just wanted to say goodbye", He said quietly."Mamoru I just wanted
you to know that I'm not mad, I know you're in love with Usagi" He
inhaled another breath again.
"I'm sorry", Mamoru said to his friend.
"No, no. If I wanted anyone with her, I'm glad it's you", Motoki said
weakly and he took in another rough breath. "You've been so good to
me and I know you love her as much as you love me. Mamoru, you're such
a strong person. That's what I've admired in you. Remember that."
Mamoru gripped his seat hard. "I'm glad that I've had the honor of
knowing you and being your best friend. Just promise me something."
"Anything man. Just name it", He whispered with tears in his eyes.
"I want you to take care of Usagi for me", Motoki said. "If you want
her go for it cause all that matters to me is HER happiness. And YOURS
too. I've always placed both of your guys happiness above my own. If
you love her I'm happy for you." Motoki turned his head slowly to look
at Usagi. "Wake her for me" Mamoru shook Usagi and she opened her eyes
rubbing them with her small fists. Walking to him Usagi sat down and
took his hand.
"Usagi, I have to say goodbye now", He said and Usagi shook her head
as she began to cry.
"No, don't leave me", She sobbed."I love you"
"I have to go. They're calling me", He said to her."It's okay. I have no
regrets, I would rather die a thousand times if it meant loving you for
only one of those lifetimes" He caressed her face and looked at his
friend."Take care of Mamoru for me, alright?"
"Yes", She said and Motoki took another throaty breath. "Don't forget me
Motoki" She wiped her eyes.
"How could anyone forget you Usagi?", He replied with a soft smile and
then winked at Mamoru. "Don't be afraid to fall in love again. It's
okay"
"I will NEVER love anyone like I loved you", Usagi said and took a
deep breath. "Motoki if you have go, it's alright. I don't want you
to suffer" Tears fell from her eyes and she started to sob.
"No more tears Usa", Motoki told her. He looked at up at her
for a moment. Usagi sat on his bed and gazed at Motoki with love.
"You know where I'm going? Remember for my birthday we went camping
and Usagi caught that fish but it was the size of tadpole"
"Yeah, then I teased her about it for days so she threw my shoes in the
river", Mamoru added with a small chuckle.
"Then as revenge you threw MY shoes in the river", Usagi added.
"You two walked barefoot for the whole week", Motoki said and smiled.
"I going back to those woods, I'll wait for you there. We can go
camping again" His eyes were full of tears. "Usagi?"
"Yeah?", She said chokingly.
"Sing that song to me, the one you sang our last night in the
woods", He asked and took in another long breath. Time was getting
short. She nodded and took his hand.
"Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven?", She sang in gentle
voice. "Would it be the same if I saw you in heaven? I must be strong
and carry on. Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven" Mamoru sat
on the other side and Motoki gave his hand a squeeze. "Would you hold
my hand if I saw you in heaven? Would you help me stand if I saw you
in heaven? I'll find my way, through night and day. Cause I know I
just can't stay here in heaven" Mamoru felt tears fill his eyes
and saw that slowly Motoki's breath was beginning to slow. "Beyond the
door, there's peace I'm sure. And I know there'll be no more Tears
in Heaven..." The sun began to rise and with one more loving look
and one more loving sigh. Motoki gave himself up to God.
"I love you Motoki", Mamoru said to his friend. He wanted Motoki
to hear him say it as he floated to heaven.
"I love you", Usagi said with tears falling from her face."MOTOKI,
I LOVE YOU!" She buried her face in the hospital bed as she sobbed
and behind Mamoru put a hand on her shoulder as tears fell from
his own face. The sun had risen and now a new day would begin.
Without Motoki.
*****************************************************************
The car drive was silent and Usagi looked out the window at the
empty streets. Her throat was raw from crying so hard and she
felt tired. The shadow of death surrounded them and looking
at Mamoru she saw her own face reflected in him. All of sudden
he parked on the side of the road and Mamoru burst into tears.
He gripped the steering wheel, his head down. He
was gone. His best friend was gone. Mamoru's knuckles were
ivory white and Usagi placed both her hands on his.
"No Motoki", He cried loudly and Usagi's eyes were glassy with
tears.
"Yes Mamo-chan", She said quietly.
