In order to better accomodate sounds in borrowed words that did not fit those sounds natural to the Japanese language, the "new" katakana were added to simulate these sounds. Remember, a borrowed word may sound similar to how it would in the original language, bur rarely to the two pronunciations match exactly. In the case of certain sounds, it is not uncommon for the native Japanese speaker to not be able to pronounce the sound easily. (Think back to the RA-RI-RU-RE-RO series and the trouble you might have had in getting the sound correct and you will understand better this feeling)
