Chapter 6

Buffy approached the old school. It was starting to get dark and she and Spike had decided they should get there early for The Masters arrival. She walked along with the peroxide blond beside her. It was just about dark enough for him to be out here.

She paused as she saw it, Ozzfest. She may not have the highly developed senses of some slayers but she didn't need them to know that place was crawling with vampires. She wouldn't walk in there and start slaying, of course. The security was to tight and the humans looked to much like the vampires to tell the difference.

She moved closer to Spike as they approached the gates. She was nervous, how were they going to get in? Would she be able to stop the master? Could she find the master in all these people.

Spike took her arms and pulled her of down the side of the ground. She followed him round the back until they came to a break in the fence, apparently behind the main stage. THere was no-one there and she could hear the band start up. They must all be to busy with lighting etc to worry about anyone sneaking in back here.

Spike want through first, helping her to follow him. He took a few steps forward then stopped.

“He'll probably open the hell mouth from here,” the vampire decided. “The thing is actually over there a bit but this is close enough for all intents and purposes. And it's quiet”

Buffy nodded and sat down on a box. She was tired. Apart from the nightmares that had been keeping her awake normally, last night had been hectic. First with Giles then Dawn had been so upset that she had had to sit up late with her then realising they still didn't know when the Master was planing his little accession so having to go to the magick box to find out, even if she had fallen asleep in Spike in the magick box.

Then all day people had been coming round. Apparently Willow had gone and phoned the police. No-one had seen Buffy come or go so she wasn't suspected. She had to deal with the police coming round and telling her what had happened and then all her well-meaning friends crowding her when she wanted nothing move then to curl up in bed and get some sleep.

She shivered and pulled her coat closer to her. Spike moved and sat down besides her and lit up. She could hear the music quite well and Spike was humming along. Well at least he was happy.

She sighed. Why were things all piling up. Things seemed so bad. Giles was dead, she was facing the biggest threat she had faced in a long time, she was still depressed from being dead and wasn't quite in top form yet.

But Spike was here, he would help her. She had to rely on Spike a lot lately and it would only get more like that now, but she didn't mind. He may have been evil once, he may still be evil deep down inside, but for now he was helping her and that was all she really cared about. He was behaving at the moment so she would put the things he had done behind her and concentrate on the here and now.

A noise came from the fence. She glanced over and saw shadows moving.

“Looks like it's about show time,” Spike commented. Buffy nodded and the moved over behind a crate so the emerging vampires wouldn't see them. THe both clutched stakes tightly in there hands.

The vampires began to emerge from the gap in the fence. There was a lot of them, Spike gestured to Buffy and they crept closer, hoping to take them by surprise. When about 6 vampire were through the gap they jumped. Buffy managed to stake the first one easily. THe second was harder, it whirled around, all fangs and bumps, but she managed to stake it before it could lunge.

Two vampires quickly set on her as more moved through the gap in the fence. She hit one to the floor but the other grabbed the stake out of her hand. She swirled and kicked the vampire, grabbed the stake back and plunged it through her heard. Another vampire grabbed her from behind and the slayer quickly threw the bloodsucker over her shoulder and stake it.

She turned and quickly staked one mid-lunge by holding up her fist but she was grabbed from the side by one hell of a big vampire. He managed to get his arm around her and pick her up, about to bite, when Spike drove a stake through it's heart. She didn't have time to think Spike as another vampire approached her and she kicked it in the gut, sending it reeling back into another one. She staked another, then another. One grabbed her and threw her against a tree but she managed to pull around and kick the vampire in the chin. She straddled it and staked it but another jumped on her back. She rolled over and staked it.

She tensed waiting for the next attack but it didn't come. THere were only three vampires left, apart from Spike. Two female vampire and, stood between them, a very tall male vampire. He was dressed in a black jacked and plant with a white shirt and black tie.

“I wasn't expecting you to find me until after the accession,” The Master said, smiling silkily.

“Yeah, well I'm good at surprising people,” she replied, taking a deep breath but holding her defensive stance.

“I still doubt you can stop me from opening the mouth of hell. Compared to me the vampires you have just slayed were mere children, uneducated in the ways of life. I, however, am more then ready to kill you. I have killed 5 slayers before when they interfered with my plans and you shall be no different.”

“Well see about that,” Buffy said, stepping forward towards The Master. The two women moved and attacked Spike but Buffy didn't even notice as The Master moved on her, punching her hard in the stomach repeatedly and making her fall on her ass. On the Main stage Ozzy began to sing...

You make promise of protection
To a future after life
To the final resurrection
And to eternal paradise

The Master reached over and grasped her neck, pulling her up of the floor. She brought her leg up and kicked him in his nuts and he dropped her. She spun around and kicked him again but he was ready and he caught her foot and threw he to the ground.

But then I'm blinded with temptation
And to every mortal sin
Is it God that sits there waiting?
Or will the darkness suck me in

She managed to stand quickly as the master threw another punch. She dodged but he still hit her shoulder. THe punch left him of balance and she managed to throw him to the ground.

Let's wake up the dead
Oh yeah
It's better that never you know
More tears are shed
Oh yeah
I'm praying that you'll never know
That I'm facing hell She pulled out her stake but he was to fast, rolling out of the way then bringing his feet up into her stomach and throwing her across the confined space behind the stage.

Oh the children sit and listen
The belief was in their eyes
In a land without tomorrows
Through the night you hear their cries

He walked up to her and pulled picked up the stake she had lost. He brought it down into her gut, causing her to double over. She screamed and the master pulled the stake up again, ready to plunge it into her chest but she rolled and he buried it in the ground instead. In great pain she managed to pull herself to her feet.

But then your eyes just skip the pages
Of a book that never ends
Is it God that sits there waiting?
Do you hear the call again?

She tried to punch him ut he blocked her. She swung her legs around and tried to knock him to the floor but he dodged. She knew he was just toying with her now. She was exhausted and badly wounded. This shouldn't happen to her. Why did this always happen to her?

She jumped for her stake and tried to pull it out of the ground but The Master grabbed her hair and pulled her to her feet with it.

Let's wake up the dead
Oh yeah
It's better that never you know
More tears are shed
Oh yeah
I'm praying that you'll never know
That I'm facing hell

Spike drove his stake home in one of the female vampires chest and threw the other from where she was clinging to his back. This wasn't going well at all. He glanced over at Buffy and realised she was in much more trouble then him. The Master was holding her of the ground by her hair.

“Come on luv,” he whispered.

It's just crazy world we live in
And I'm out of my mind
You pray tomorrow but your leaving today
Evil one is coming and he's knocking your door
Cause today's the day you'll pay

Buffy managed to get a look at Spike, he had dealt with one of the vampires and looked like he would take the other to. She coughed and blood ran out of her mouth. Suddenly she realised she was dying again. She didn't want to die. She didn't want it to end but she couldn't move, couldn't fight.

The Master pulled her close and was about to bite her, killing her.

Let's wake up the dead
Oh yeah
It's better that never you know
More tears are shed
Oh yeah
I'm praying that you'll never know

Spike pulled himself together and grabbed his stake, plunging it through the female vampires chest. She screamed as she exploded into dust and Spike quickly turned to see The Master staring at him, stopped in mid bite.

Let's wake up the dead
Oh yeah
It's better that never you know
More tears are shed
Oh yeah
I'm praying that you'll never know

The Master threw her to the floor, stumbling forward towards where the female vampire had been staked. Buffy managed to pull herself to her feet and grab the stake. She stumbled a few steps forward, holding the stake out before her and fell on the masters back.

That I'm facing hell
That I'm facing hell
That I'm facing hell
That I'm facing hell

Spike watched The Master explode into dust and Buffy fall to the ground. He leapt forward and picked her up, holding her to his chest. She didn't argue, in fact she turned her head to it lay against his chest.

“It's going to be ok,” he whispered, more for himself then her. He stumbled to his feet, holding her to his chest, then he turned and headed out of the fence, stirring the ashes of The Masters army as he went. He couldn't let her die. He wouldn't let her die. It was just not going to happen.

Grief stricken, he stumbled towards the hospital, he would save her. This time he wouldn't let her die.

It was raining. Rain was falling down all around them. It was also terrible silent. Storm clouds lay heavily in the sky, allowing for vampires to walk through the day but Buffy didn't even notice. She stood at the graveside with her friends, watching as the man who had been like a father to her was committed to the earth.

The ceremony had ended about 15 minutes ago and now they were filling in the grave. Dawn was lent on Buffy's shoulder but Buffy didn't stroke her hair or even seem to notice her sister. Willow and Tara and Xander and Anya stood back, watching them. Eventually Tara stepped forward and took Dawn away. They made there way back to the house. Xander and Anya soon followed. Willow stayed a while but soon, when Buffy didn't move. She went home to the warm house to get dry.

Buffy did notice when someone else came up. He wrapped his strong arms around her waits, pulling her back onto him. She sighed and reached up, running her hand over his face.

“I'm sorry love,” he whispered. She bit her lip, trying to hide the tears but she couldn't stop them. She turned in Spikes arms and began to cry on his chest.

“I can't believe he's gone,” she sobbed. He stroked he hair reassuringly but somehow it didn't comfort her.

“It's going to be ok love,” he whispered, stroking her face. “At least he's at peace.”

“No,” she sobbed, “He's gone.”

He sighed. They had had this conversation a million times before. Life after death. The knew there had to be something but she wouldn't believe him. He didn't bother to argue with her now. They could fight about it later, for now she just needed a hug. Finally the tears subsided and she just stood there in his arms, feeling safe in his embrace. She glanced up at the sky and noticed the clouds were getting lighter. “We should get inside,” she whispered. “Come on.”

He followed her as she led him towards her house. THey slipped inside and he helped her out of her wet coat. She went into the living room and he followed. It was empty.

“I thought everyone was coming back here,” he said.

“They all went to Xanders,” she told him. “Dawn's staying there tonight. I think she wanted to get away from all the memories.”

“You should go be with them.”

“I don't want to.”

THey both stood there for a moment, dripping on the floor. Spike reached out and pushed a strand of Buffy's damp hair back and she smiled at him. Without a word she turned and made her way upstairs then came back down with two towels. He had taken of his coat and quickly towelled down his hair.

“Your still dripping everywhere,” she commented, looking at the puddle that was forming around his feet.

“Sorry luv,” he replied. “I should go.”

“The sun could come out any time and besides, I don't want to be alone.” He sighed and looked at the younger woman. He reached over and took the towel from her hands, using it to dry her hair. She sighed and let him.

For a moment he thought he might kiss her. There lips were so close. But he didn't want to loose there friendship. It had taken him a long time to get her to trust him and he wasn't going to waist it over some quick kiss. Besides, she needed him. He was about to pull away when she kissed him. It was soft at first, explorational. THen she demanded more, her tongue entering his mouth and deepening the kiss. They carried on kissing passionately until they both had to come up for air.

THey just stood there for a second, looking at each other. Then they were on each other again. Mouths clashed, clothes went flying, and a few pieces of furniture became casualties of war.

“Hi,” Dawn said, stepping through the door. She froze when she saw the destruction that was the living room. Stepping through the debris she made her way to the stairs and shouted for Buffy. A few seconds late her older sister appeared, wearing only a dressing gown.

“What is it Dawn.”

“Everything's smashed up... I came home for a sweater.”

“Buffy,” Dawn heard Spike call from the bedroom. Dawn froze then a slow smile crept over her face.

“I’ll only be a minute,” Buffy replied, her cheeks slowly turning red.

Dawn grinned and grabbed a sweater out of the destruction. Maybe everything wasn't perfect but it looked like things were definitely looking up for Spike and Buffy and who knew? They might soon look up for her to.
