Wechter and his band have earned three gold records and are known for their hit songs "Coming In The Back Door," "Spanish Flea," "Brazilia," "Foul Play," "Coney Island" and "Up Cherry Street." He has toured with Herb Alpert as a member of the Tijuana Brass since they recorded "Lonely Bull" 15 years ago.
Wechter plays the marimbas on Alpert's new album "Rise," and has reformed the Baja Marimba Band for an engagement in Reno.
Father of director David Wechter, the senior Wechter also scored his son's 16mm movie "Junior High School."
MICHAEL NANKIN, 24, and DAVID WECHTER, 23, wrote and directed "Midnight Madness," their first feature film.
Just out of film school, Nankin and Wechter were hired by Executive Producer Ron Miller on the merit of "Junior High School," an award-winning 16mm film they made as film school seniors.
The young filmmakers have been making Super 8 movies together since they were 13. A grant from the American Film Institute enabled them to make "Junior High School" which won numerous film festival awards including the Greater Miami International Film Festival (1978), the New York Filmmakers Exposition (1979), Los Angeles International Film Exposition (1979), U.S.A. Film Festival, Dallas (1979), the 21st Annual Rochester International Film Festival, Rochester, N.Y. (1979), Big Muddy Film Festival, Southern Illinois University (1979), and CINE Eagle Award, Washington, D.C. (1979).
