Midnight Madness Script Changes

I am lucky enough to have an original copy of the revised 2nd draft of Midnight Madness from April 9, 1979. Now there are many changes between the script and the movie, and as it takes a lot of time and effort on my part to post them on my webpage I am only going to put up any major changes. Since my script is an original there are notes made on some of the pages in pencil. If you look closely you can see there is an extension number on the cover. On the cast description page on the inside it lists when each cast member first enters the story. For example, Melio comes in on page 11 in the script, but Scott doesn't until page 37.

The page below was taken from the script and is the scene where the Hare Krishnas are harassing Harold in the LA Airport. (Double click for a close-up)

The following was added to the opening theme song sequence in between Candy and Sunshine passing out invitations.
Two feet trudge up a winding metal staircase-- until they come to a heavy metal door. The door opens and we follow the feet as they walk outside onto a cement deck. the feet stop and we tilt up to see two hands unroll a map of southern California and place it atop a cement railing. The hands take out a compass and draw a circle on the map around the city of Los Angeles. The camera booms up and over the cement wall, revealing a panoramic view of the city below us-- Los Angeles at night.

Two two feet walk along the floor and stop at the base of some kind of machine. Camera tilts up the machine to reveal that it is a coin-operated video game. Two hands open a black briefcase and remove a complicated lookig circuit board and a screwdriver. The hands pry open a panel of the side of the video machine, remove its circuit board, and replace it with the one from the briefcase.

The two feet, wearing only socks which need mending, are crossed beneath a desk. We tilt up to see two hands working at the dimly lit desk, which is littered with computer read-out sheets, rulers, maps, etc. The hands busily rearrange the tiles from a Scrabble game, scrambling the same set of tiles to form different words. One hand accidentally spills a cup of coffee all over the desk and then wipes the mess up with its sleeve.

The feet walk down a corridor and then stop in front of a row of lockers. Camera tilts up and two hands open a locker with a key. They place a colorfully-wrapped box inside.

The feet stand on a metal platform. We tild up to see a hand pushing buttons on a calculator. The hand moves to adjust a dial on a huge telescope. The camera trucks in to the telescope until we are looking through the lens. Through the panning telescope we see the various buildings and landmarks of Los Angeles at night.

When Leon is explaining the game to the 5 team captains the following was added
LEON: Each team may bring along reference books, calculators, maps, etc. --anything you feel may help. The only boundaries of the game are those of the city of Los Angeles.

When Harold's Dad is telling him he's joining the Great All-Nighter....
HAROLD'S FATHER: Now, you're entering that Treasure Hunt, and that's final!

Harold's dad storms out of the room. Harold looks through the window and sees that his friends are still watching. He pretends that his father is still in the room.

HAROLD: Oh yeah?! Well, let me tell you a couple of things....

Harold's friends watch through the window in astonishment. Harold is apparently "balling his dad out," yelling like a madmad and flinging his father's trophies onto the floor. But then Harold's dad comes around the front of the house. The gang sees him and realizes what Harold is doing. Melio laughs hysterically. harold, about to fling down the largest trophy, glances out the window, sees that his father is with his friends, and then timidly begins polishing the trophy with his shirt.

When Flynch tells Adam about his date....
ADAM: No kidding, Don Juan! You got a date all by yourself?

FLYNCH: Well, not exactly. My mother helped. Zelda is the daughter of a friend of Mother's.

More script changes to come!
