Erin Brockovich
Universal Pictures, Rated R
Directed by Steven Soderbergh
Written by Susannah Grant

Steven Soderbergh finally got a hit movie out of this, and up until Gladiator, it was 2000's highest grossing film. Pardon the pun, but the film itself is very engrossing, considering that it's about an environmental lawsuit (a true story). However, Julia Roberts brings a lot to the title character and carries the film well. She also works very well with Albert Finney as her boss George. They bounce off each other well. Her relationship with a biker (Aaron Eckhart) next door (which has since turned very sour in real life) might be the least interesting aspect of the film but it doesn't take up too much of the story. Soderbergh's direction and Grant's script are sharp, and once again, Oscar nominee Anne V. Coates (who has worked with Soderbergh on this and his last two great films Out of Sight and The Limey) proves that she is one of the best editors in the business. Soderbergh has done it again and this film might very well put him on the A list of directors. A
