Dimension Films, Rated R
Directed by Wes Craven
Written by Ehren Kruger
The final chapter in the trilogy starts out somewhat ridiculous and only gets a little better. Some of the wit of the first two is present here but one can tell there is a different screenwriter at work. The plot involves killings on the set of Stab 3 the sequel to the sequel to the movie within a movie in Scream 2 (you follow?). The cast of the movie includes Jenny McCarthy, Matthew Keeslar and the always-exemplary Parker Posey (definitely the high point of the film) as potential victims or perpetrators, not to mention the director (Scott Foley) and producer (Lance Henrikson). "Seinfeld" and "NewsRadio's" Patrick Warburton is wasted as a bodyguard whom practically has "victim" written on his forehead. Soon our old friends Dewey and Gale (David Arquette and Courteney Cox-Arquette; you know you have a successful franchise if a marriage or two has resulted) and later Sydney Prescott herself (Neve Campbell, phoning it in like never before), the one who started it all are investigating the murders. At first the plot seems totally without consequence or significance as we've been through this before. It's only in the last reel when the killer is revealed that the film's Return of the Jedi-esque plot points are realized. Celebrity cameos throughout are delightful but it's only when Posey is on the screen that one truly has fun. Her performance alone is worth at least a half-letter grade so I give it a C. (Since my first review for this site was Scream 2, it seems only fitting that I make the switch to letter grades with this one.)
