Grady Tripp (Michael Douglas) has won a critically-acclaimed bestselling novel. He is now a professor at a well-respected college but is stuck in a rut with his followup novel. At the same time, he is having an affair with his boss's wife (Frances McDormand) and has to look after a troubled student (Tobey Maguire) as well as his looney publisher (Robert Downey, Jr.). A cast of intriguing hilarious characters helps this become the first great film of 2000 and it's just a very well-done little movie and a worthy followup to Hanson's fantastic L.A. Confidential. Grade: A-
