Chung Chung as SNOW
Having come into the stadium bringing along with me all the remarks and criticisms that have gathered in the media during
the past weeks prior to the show, has made watching the show a different experience altogether. Not only was i to admire what i knew was going to be a great show put on by ChungChung, but had to scrutinise every aspect of her performance attentively to pr
ovide myself with my very own strong basis to retaliate against the spurious comments by the reporters in HK.
And as expected, what they had said were just a load of worthless crap made up in hope to capture more readers, but ruthlessly at the expense of others, namely ChungChung herself who had already been put under such tremendous pressure and eyed upon with h
igh expectations as to live up to the standards given by the former lead actress of the musical, Sandy Lam.
The first scene prepared myself for what i was to expect from ChungChung's performance throughout the entire play. I was greatly impressed by the versatility in her voice which allowed her to adjust to a higher pitch in this show as compared to her n
ormal low tone in the HK serials. And her high voice coupled with the strength in its transmission reminded me of a soprano in an opera. The first scene between ChungChung and Jacky alone, revealed more of the character ChungChung portrayed - an innocent,
vibrant girl so full of positive thoughts and a happy disposition that seemingly nothing can vex her at all. At this point in time, one can confidently mark out the appropriateness of ChungChung or Sandy Lam for the character- much of the characteristics
of Ah Suet closely resembles the true nature of ChungChung, whilst Sandy Lam in contrast has more or less a reserved temperament, let alone the fact that some aspects may be in sharp contrast to the character being played - Sandy is demure, too "mature"
for the role and doesn't have that classic "style" to fit the role convincingly as ChungChung does.
The next encounter between Ah Suet and Ah Long, was one which allowed for the development of the passion between the 2 persons. This scene gave me quite a pure adrenalin rush for ChungChung climbed up that ladder so quickly i feared she might trip=)
The song that ChungChung sung here (花 與 琴 的 流 星 ) gave me quite an impression maybe because it was the 1st "proper" song sung by her in the play. Here i had the opportunity to listen to her voice carefully and allowed for the sweet melody of her si
nging to meander its way into my ears and developed its very own acoustics within my body. I could really feel it!! It was definitely a rewarding sensation. Having heard ChungChung's songs for so long at home, one can surely agree with me on this point as
to how "lost" you can get in her singing, but hearing her live in the show offered an even better experience!!! At this point in time, i began my assessment between the singings of ChungChung and Sandy Lam. I dare not make any comparsion between the two
since it is a very subjective task and that both artists are well known for their capabilities in this field, but i can assure you that ChungChung did a wonderful job- she gave enough emotions to the song so that we as audience can empathise with how the
character of Ah Suet is feeling at that time and yet still allowed us to appreciate the great talent she had in her voice in terms of her strength and how well she manipulated it. ChungChung stood out well when Jacky enterd the song too and both had thier
own worlds in their singing - definitely not as the Hk reporters had said that ChungChung;s voice was overridden by Jacky's just because they heard the rehearsals only!!!!
The following scene between Ah Suet and Yuk Fung (played by Kit Chan), allowed me the time to look between the 2 artsists. Both sung very well in their solo parts of the song (兩 個 她 的 秘 密 理 想 ) , but when it came to the two singing together,
ChungChung's voice stood out the most- not only was it more outstanding in terms of emotions but ChungChung readjusted her voice to a higher pitch so that we could hear the 2 distinct voices between them too rather than just a mixture of two indistinguis
hable voices. I can say that Kit Chan definitely does have a good voice
in terms of strength, and reaching notes, but she lacks that one imperative component especially when it comes to a musical and that is the touch of feeling to it. ChungChung does this
very well - we could sense the joy and love she has in her as she is singing=)
The next solo song that ChungChung sung called 愛 狼 說 can be
refferred to as one of the "classic" songs sung by ChungChung in the play! Here you get to hear all aspects of her wonderful voice - emotions, harmony, sweetness, its flow and its soothi
ngness. From a soft, gentle verse to start with, her voice reaches a
crescendo and this is the point where all her emotions are "injected" into the song. Definitely an excellent job done here!
The market scene to follow marks quite a turning point to the typical
soft and sweet genre that we have become accustomed to since the start of the musical, and allows us to see another superb talent in ChungChung's remarkable performance! Here we se
e ChungChung and Jacky dancing ever so aggressively whilst singing with
such energy to the song 花 花 嘉 年 華 。. I was greatly impressed by the flow and energy in ChungChung's dance which i have never seen her do so well before!! Her high heels, her fla
iring dress and her manouvres all added to the "bravo" of her dance.
2 songs that ChungChung sung filled with intense feelings and emotions are the other version of 愛 狼 說 and 內 疚 .
The former song she sang with a different style to the first version. More flourished with sentiments, ChungChung creates the perfect subdued and melancholic atmosphere!! The latter song, many have claimed to be the best performed one. ChungChung truly sp
ills out all that she's got from her heart in this song- no one would have done well as she has done in this song, with tears of sadness being ChungChung's background vocals. At parts she sings with the weak tone indicative of the fragility in her heart,
which was long wounded but stabbed again, and at other times she sings with a mild rise in loudness to express her anger and frustration at the situation. Even Jacky Cheung ( who hardly budges when it comes to offerring compliments) admits that ChungChung
has done an outstanding job and greatly triumphs over Sandy in this repect. Great work ChungChung!!!
The last song that ChungChung sings before Ah Suet dies in the play, is yet another different type of style whereby a less flowing, faster pace and less gentle tune is adapted. ChungChung here sings with rage and anger as she struggles and fights wit
h Ah Jik (played by Michael Tse).
Overall, ChungChung has done a magnificent job in her performance in this musical and her efforts and times spent on getting into this character has done her service. Despite, the prior rubbish she endured from the HK media, ChungChung has proved
herself to be successful in the show, and has earned her reward by
gaining great appreciation and recognition by the singaporeans, leading to her recent victory in taking out on 1st place in 3 singaporean votes on the best acting artsist : 學 生 偶 像 投
票 , 發 燒 紅 星 大 獎 , 燒 滾 滾 女 演 員 獎 ,
and her new worldwide recognised title as the Queen of HK serials ( 港 劇 天 后 ).
