Wu is a quiet and soft spoken person who spends all his time caring for his flowers. He has only ever had the company of a naughty monkey called Ed Ed.
Wu is hired as a gardener by the pretentious upper-class Ning family who has two beautiful daughters, ling Suet and Yuk Fung. It is only his third day there when the Ning family decides to hold a banquet. One of the guests, the rich Leung Jik, is determined to get the attention of Jing suet. He plucks the flowers that Were planted by Wu to make a bouquet and offers it to her. The rest of his gang follows suit and wildly picks away.
Wu cannot tolerate his flowers being dismembered and he confronts Leung Jik and his gang who savagely beats him up. Mrs Ning, a cautiously vicious little woman who is indifferent to the beating that Wu receives, unfairly dismisses him on the' spot.
Moved by Wu's selfless action to protect the flowers, the two sisters take pity on him and Jing Suet offers to tend to his wounds. Jing suet is a daring and liberal minded girl while Yuk Fung is quiet and an introvert, the complete opposite.
While Jing Suet is dressing Wu's wounds with her red silk scarf, Wu secretly enjoys the company of this extraordinary girl and finds that he is attracted to her. Though Wu has recurring nightmares about a girl dressed in red who stands agonisingly in a hellish fire, he is unable to identify who she is.
Jing Suet also finds herself falling for him. When Jing suet returns later to the old church for her violin, Wu takes the opportunity to invite her to his world - a greenhouse where he has planted ail types of beautiful flowers. The sight of these flowers delight .ling Suet and both sit together on the church's rooftop wishing upon the shooting stars that their dreams will come true.
Gifted in music, Jing Suet hopes to be an outstanding performer one day while Wu wants to grow a special flower that signifies LOVE and he wants to name it after her.
Jing Suet tells Yuk Fang everything about her relationship with Wu though Yuk Fung does not disclose about her own admiration and feelings for Wu.
One night, Wu ask ]ing Suet out for a boat ride..ling Suet talks about her aunt who lives by a lake in Vienna and who has also arranged schooling for her. Jing Suet tells Wu how much she wants a little house by the lake and how much she wants to live there with Wu. As the lovebirds happily fantasise of their future together, the waves begin to pick up and the boat is rocked violently. Their inseparable bond is further strengthened by this timely outburst from the sea.
Leung Jik decides to propose to Jing Suet on Valentine's Day. Jing Suet not only rejects Leung Jik, she even goes further by taking Wu to the carnival, letting everybody know that she has chosen Wu.
The two are separated by the massive crowd at the carnival and Leung .l ik appears before Wu. He goes on talking about how Wu would ruin .ling Suet's promising future and that Wu should sacrifice himself in order for Jing Suet to lead a happy life. Because Wu loves .ling Suet deeply, he mistakenly takes Leung ]ik's words of deceit as words of wisdom.
When Wu finds Jing Suet, he promises her a big fireworks display as a present but accidentally burns down the entire fireworks kiosk instead. The fireworks incident brings their affair to an abrupt end. Planning to sacrifice himself, Wu tells Jing Suet that he does not love her, He is subsequently arrested by the police for arson and is put into jail.
With Wu in prison, Leung Jik proceeds to carry out his scheme of deceit. He first persuades Jing Suet to move to Vienna and with the help of corrupt prison officials starts spreading false stories about Wu's death, Jing Suet believes him and is utterl y shattered on hearing the news. Wu, in the meatline, is also shattered when he sees the wedding invitation that Leung .Ilk flashes before him announcing the coming marriage of ling Suet and Leung Jik.
Meanwhile, a riot in prison adds time to Wu's sentence and he is thrown into the dungeon. There, he first meets the Wolf Fairy, who encourages him topersevere and be faithful in love. He also offers Wu some seeds and tells him to plant them; these could well be the seeds to Wu's very own "Ning Jing Suet".
When Wu has finally served his time and is released from prison, he returns home to find a familiar figure feeding his monkey. It is not ling Suet but Yuk rung. Yuk rung lends out a helping hand, making it possible for Wu to stand on his own two feet again.
Wu has his own flower shop now.
Yuk Fung has secretly been in love with Wu all this while and nurses hopes that she could replace Jing suet in his heart. She cannot help but become sad when Mrs Ning steps in once again to intervene. After what has happened to ling Suet, Mrs Ning begs Wu to let Yuk Fung go.
Wu has always believed that his sacrifice would enable ling Suet to lead a happy and wonderful life but is greatly upset to learn that Jing suet has been leading a tormented life since their separation.
Unable to withstand the guilt, Yuk Fung encourages Wu to go to Vienna to find Jing Suet. wu finally finds his beloved Jing Suet playing at a violin recital on Christmas eve. Their eyes meet and both are overcome with emotions. But Jing suet is unable to face Wu because she once promised him that she will wait for him forever. She quickly disappears into the crowd.
The next day, Wu reads in the newspaper that Leung Jik has murdered Jing Suet and her body was found at the bottom of the lake. Stunned by the horrific news, Wu rushes to the lake. A girl in red suddenly appears, In deep grief, he at first thinks it is ling Suet but it is actually Yuk Fung.
Yuk rung tries to comfort him but fails to alleviate the excruciating pain in his heart.
The Wolf Fairy reappears. Sensing that Wu's love for Jing suet is genuine and faithful, he reveals to Wu the Time Slot that allows him to travel back in time but does not have the power to alter the events that have already happened.
Somewhere back in time, ]ing Suet rushes home to confront Leung Jik about the lies that he told about Wu's supposed death. Leung Jik admits to it but also claims to be a victim of a loveless marriage who has been used by ling Suet to build a dream house that she had fantasized living in with Wu.
A heated quarrel breaks out and Wu exits from the Time Slot to defend Jing Suet and fights with Leung Jik. Wu wants to take Jing Suet away when Leung Jik suddenly pulls out a gun to shoot him, but misses and accidentally kills ling Suet instead. Distraught that he had killed Jing Suet, Leung Jik runs away in a fit of madness.
Carrying Jing Suet in his arms, Wu calmly walks towards and descends into the middle of the lake, As the Time Slot closes, both gradually fade into oblivion for all eternity.
An extraordinary flower soon grows up from the lake - a flower that redefines love to anyone who sees it.
It is not long before the lake is widely known as "snow - Wolf - Lake".
