Now, no offence to Mr Nesbitt personally, but I'm sure that this page will not go down at all well with other BallyK fans. The reason? James Nesbitt, for those of you who have been living in a cave, plays one Leo McGarvey, the husband of Mrs McGarvey, formerly known as Assumpta Fitzgerald. Being the man who has come between Assumpta and Fr Peter Clifford, has made Jimmy Nesbitt one of the most unpopular actors on British TV at the moment, only slightly behind the bloke who was responsible for Deirdre whats-her-name being suddenly catapulted into Prisoner Cell Block H.
The Happy Couple?
And this is where I have the problem. I consider myself one of BallyK's greatest fans and wanted Peter and Assumpta to get together as much as anyone, but, I was rather taken with Leo in the first series - I thought Assumpta should have married him then - so, much as I like Peter, I think that Leo is much the better bet. Even die-hard fans like me have to admit that Peter was never going to be what Assumpta wanted, was he? I'm also rather fond of the actor and his wonderful cheeky smile (which goes part way to explain why I wanted him to marry Assumpta!)
Unfortunately, I know relatively little about Jimmy Nesbitt so this can't be a fan page as such yet but I am working on it. So, for the time being, this page will have to be nothing more than a quiet corner of the web, where people can show their support for an endangered species - the McGarvey's marriage!
However, after they graduated, Assumpta's mother died - her father had died some years before - and Assumpta inherited the pub, meaning that she had to return to BallyK. Leo was going to come with her,getting a job with the local paper. This all changed when he was offered a job in Fleet Street which Assumpta felt he could not turn down. He wanted to stay but she told him he'd regret it if he did, so he left.
Leo returned in series one, episode five, when he came back to cover the elections. He told Assumpta he was still in love with her and asked he to go away with him. At this time, she was still unsure of her feelings for Peter and so she refused. It was clear though, that she still felt something for Leo and the decision was not an easy one for her.
No more was heard of him until now when he came back as Assumpta's new husband. What happened in London we shall never know (although, if the BBC feel like making a Coronation Street-style special edition video . . . !) but we know it will end in tears for all concerned.
