"You Were Meant For Me" – Part 1

Brenda knocked hesitantly on Mac’s door, not sure if Robin was there and really not wanting to face Mac, now that he was "pro-Miranda". Plus, the last time she was here, Brenda had not made the most favorable impression. She was much relieved when Robin answered the door with a smile and a hug. Robin invited her inside, and immediately noticed her grim expression.
"Brenda? What’s wrong?"
Brenda looked around for a moment. "No one’s here," Robin reassured her, "but we can go to my room if you want…"
Brenda nodded but didn’t say anything until they had reached Robin’s room. Once there, she plopped down onto the bed, and everything came out in a rush. "I know what I want, Robin."
Robin just nodded silently and she continued. "I’ve been hanging around Sonny a lot these past few weeks, you know? And I started to feel myself … falling again …" Brenda sighed, and glanced at her friend.
"So what are you saying? That you want to be with Sonny?"
"No! That’s just it! I found myself getting *caught up* in all that … all that desperate need … and all that obsession … and, I don’t think that’s what I want anymore … I *know* that’s not what I want anymore."

Miranda quietly opened the door to Mac’s house. She was actually surprised that it was unlocked. "Mac?" she called. When no one answered, Miranda headed up the stairs. She had left her book here the other day, and had decided to pick it up on her way home. As she reached the top, Miranda heard muffled voices from the one room. She recognized the one as Brenda’s, and stopped for a moment to listen.

"So you want to be with Jax?" Robin asked.
"Yes! I want to be with Jax!" Brenda giggled, like a schoolgirl with a crush. "Forever. I love him, Robin. More than I ever thought I could … and it just … *overwhelms* me sometimes."
Outside, Miranda almost felt sick to her stomach, but she didn’t move from her place.
Inside, Brenda continued. "And I know I’ve hurt him so much these last few weeks, with moving out and all … but I know he loves me …"
Robin sighed. "Listen, Bren, I don’t mean to … rain on your parade … and I know that Jax loves you, but …"
"What? But what?"
"Well, have you told him about what happened between you and Sonny in the cave?"
Miranda tried not to make a noise from outside, but she was overcome with curiosity. So, *something* had happened between Brenda and Sonny? This was *the* perfect way to get Jax back!, she thought.
Brenda was silent for a moment. "Jax and I have always been honest with each other. I mean, when he didn’t tell me about *saint* Miranda, I was so hurt, you know? But, god Robin, how do you tell the man you love more than anything that you slept with someone else?"
Miranda almost cried out in glee, but she forced herself to remain calm. Even that comment of Brenda’s was in the back of her mind now as Miranda bounded down the stairs and headed out the door.

Jax picked up the phone, and started dialing from his phone book. Before he could finish, however, there was a knock on his door. He opened it to find Miranda, a catty smile upon her face.
"Hi Jax!" she said, a little too cheery.
"Hi," he responded politely. Then Jax moved away from the door to allow her inside.
"Listen," Miranda began immediately. "I think you should sit down for this."
Jax looked confused. "Sit down?"
Miranda nodded and took a seat across from him. "Jax," she began, "I don’t know how to say this except to say it." She paused and he nodded, still confused. "Brenda … she slept with Sonny …"
For a moment time stood completely still and Jax’s face was completely blank.
"Jax? Did you hear what I said? Brenda *slept* with Sonny …"
"I heard you," Jax replied, his voice cold. "And I want you to leave."
"What?" Miranda was shocked. She was sure he would need a comforting ‘friend’ after recieving news like this.
"I want you to leave," he repeated.
Miranda only nodded slowly as she got up. "Jax," she placed a hand on his shoulder, "I’m here if you need to talk, okay?"
Jax remained staring at the floor. Miranda quietly let herself out.

Brenda quietly opened the penthouse door and let herself in. The room was dark, and she reached around for the light switch.
"Don’t!" Jax’s voice rang out.
"Jax?" Brenda called out. "Honey? You’re here? Why…why are you sitting in the dark?"
Jax didn’t answer, and Brenda walked over until she was standing directly in front of him. "Jax?"
He finally looked at her. His eyes had no love left in them now, just pain, and it scared the hell out of Brenda.
"Jax? What’s wrong?" She asked hesitantly.
After a few moments of silence, Jax finally said, "How could you do it, Brenda? How could you?" His voice was accusatory, and for a moment Brenda was confused. But then she realized what he was talking about and she froze.
"How did you find out?"
Jax laughed, but it was a cruel, sarcastic laugh. "You’re not even going to deny it, are you?"
"Oh god, Jax … I was going to tell you … I tried … I tried to tell you …" Brenda was sobbing now, as she sunk down onto the couch. She tried to reach out for his hand, but Jax yanked it back as if she was poison.
"I…I’m…sorry…" Brenda tears continued to fall, as she tried to explain to him.
Jax wanted so much to comfort her, to hold her. But he couldn’t. She had hurt him so much that night. Jax got up from the couch and picked up the mini-yacht. He held it in his hands and a look of longing came over his face. But then his eyes clouded over and his hands tightened around the object. The thin sails began to cut his hand, but Jax barely seemed to notice.
Brenda saw what he was doing and gasped. "Jax! Your hand, it’s bleeding!" She got up to take the yacht from his hand, but once again Jax pulled away.
"Don’t touch me."
Brenda nodded. This was it, she thought, This was the end. He would never forgive her.
Jax finally looked down at his hand and saw that it was indeed bleeding. "Damn it!" he cursed himself. Then, Jax lifted his arm, ready to throw the object into the fireplace. He wanted to smash it into a million pieces, like she had done to his heart.
Brenda saw what he was doing, she knew what he was thinking. "No!" She grabbed his arm, and Jax let his hand down. No matter what, he couldn’t bring himself to do it. Instead, Jax opened his hand and let the yacht fall to the ground. Brenda scrambled to pick it up, and Jax spun around and walked out the door.
"No!" Brenda cried, sinking to the floor. "Nobody leaves, Jax! Nobody leaves!"
Jax stopped in his tracks and turned to face her. "You know," he said, in a voice so quiet that she could barely hear him, "I would’ve forgiven you for sleeping with him. But I won’t, I *can’t*, forgive you for lying to me." He gave her one last cold, painful stare and slammed the door, never looking back.

(3 years later)

"Barrett! B-A-R-R-E-T-T!" Brenda turned away from the counter and sighed. The airline employee was completely incompetent. How could they not have record of her ticket? "Look," Brenda spoke very slowly to the woman, "Lucy Coe, C-O-E, Coe, *told* me that she would have my ticket *here* for me to pick up! I have to be in Paris by eight o’clock tomorrow morning!"
"I’m sorry, Ms. Babbett, but I *don’t* have any record of your ticket." The woman seemed rather calm considering how loud Brenda was yelling at her.
"Barrett! My name is Barrett!" Brenda thought for a minute. It had been 3 years since the divorce, but Lucy was so absentminded sometimes. "Wait," she said, "What about Jacks? Do you have anything under Jacks?"
The woman punched some keys into her computer while Brenda glanced around the busy airport. It was a few days before Christmas and families were all headed out of town.
"No, I’m sorry, we don’t have anything under that name either."
"Fine. Whatever," Brenda sighed. She was tired, and frustrated. "Just give me a ticket to Paris, one way." She handed the woman her charge card, but she saw her frown.
"I’m sorry, ma’am, but all flights are booked solid. It *is* Christmas, you know."
Brenda spun on her heel and walked away. Great!, she thought, Now what? Brenda was so enraged that she didn’t even look where she was going, until she nearly collided with another woman who was obviously in a hurry. Brenda lost her balance and started to slip.
Suddenly, a pair of strong arms reached out and caught her. The other woman had just continued on her way. "Are you alright?"
Brenda froze. It had been three long years, but she would’ve recognized that voice anywhere. That unmistakable accent. That Australian accent.
